Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 1 Geographic information system (GIS) and their role in power utility industry M.Sc. Biljana Stojkovska

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 2 Outline GIS – Geographic Information System DLE – Distribution Load Estimation GIS + DLE

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 3 GIS Why GIS technology is accepted in many electric power utilities? Customer data are geographically related LV network is widely spread Accurate record on MV network and one-line diagrams Common mapping problems

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 4 The data is usually gathered from various sources  SCADA  Corporate Business Database  Customer Information System  GIS

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 5 Why Good Estimate on Loads The real time information system (good estimate on load) is needed for various tasks –power flow calculations –network state monitoring, –removing the constraint violations, –load forecast of distribution substations, –switching planning and network topology optimization, –maintenance planning (cutting of annual network investments)

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 6 Distribution Load Estimation Estimation of load in distribution network Some of the customers are metered in real time, and some are not The problem of delayed load data can be solved by the on- line estimation of customers’ loads

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 7 Why Good Estimate on Loads Energy purchase optimization To cut the metering costs It is unrealistic to measure the load (transformer MV/LV). Load of the transformers MV/LV is build by the load of each customer

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 8 GIS Based Estimation It is much easier to utilize GIS for MV network in comparison with LV network. Keep the records of network disconectors, fusses, and the topology of the LV network, The development of metering and data transfer system in integration with distribution network Check the route connection of the customers to the transformer

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 9 GIS Based Estimation Estimation of MV/LV secondary substation’s class of load curves Estimation of load curves with respect to energy consumption. The energy consumption of the load point consists of energy consumption of all customers supplied by that transformer. The energy consumption of the load point consists of energy consumption of all customers supplied by that transformer.

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 10 Prerequisites for DLE To identify representative customer classes or load classes (residential, commercial, industrial, with/without electrical heating/air conditioning, etc) To measure load data for each customer class throughout the year, To have a correct record of the monthly energy consumption of each customerTo have a correct record of the monthly energy consumption of each customer To have an updated information of supply route from transformer MV/LV to each customer. To have an updated information of supply route from transformer MV/LV to each customer. GIS

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 11 Significance of implementing GIS + DLE Detailed representation of the input data for distribution Load Estimation Switch status of LV network We can locate the route of supply of each customer Using customer billing data instead of transformer capacities

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 12 GIS plays roles in industry restructuring the retailer's view and GIS useful management asset’s tool real-estimates of customers loads

Author name Country ID Session X – Block Y – Question Z Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 13 Owner of distribution network RETAILER Corporate business database GIS GIS ? LOCAL DISTRIBUTION COMPANY ESCO Load forecast DSM CUSTOMER STRATEGY GIS GIS MARKET BEHAVIOUR OWNER OF DIST. NETWORK ESCO Owner of distribution network
