DiMenna Children’s History Museum History Detectives

The DiMenna Children’s History Museum is located at The New York Historical Society.

Transportation The museum is located at West 77th Street and Central Park West near the 81st Street stop for the B & C trains. The museum also receives school buses on the 77th Street entrance.

Personal Items There are cubbies and closets outside the exhibits for personal items such as coats or school lunches. However they are not locked so it is encouraged that students leave any valuables they do not need at home.

Each class will have a scheduled tour with a museum educator which is arranged prior to the visit.

Best Behavior The museum educator will discuss the behavior expectations while exploring the museum. Students should be aware they are not to run, use their inside voice, they can touch but wait their turn and use respectful language.

Students start with approximately 15 minutes to freely explore the pavilions and all the interactive exhibits.

History Detectives Students will then select three pavilions they would like to focus on during the History Detective activity. This is when they investigate using a museum supplied worksheet to learn more from each of the selected pavilions. Because the resources relate to the Newsboys the Newsies pavilion should be one.

History Detectives Other pavilions that students have shown interest are the Esteban Bellan (baseball), James McCune Smith (medicine) and The Orphan Train. The museums website can provide more details about all of the pavilions.

Students should be prepared to share what they learned during their investigation.

After The Museum The trip will include a chance to see the Destination Museum which is a multi-media film about the history of New York City. There is no cafeteria so classes should bring their lunches. Students can eat across the street in Central Park or a museum classroom if one is available.

Have A Great Trip
