Do you have good Memory? By: Janyssa Phillips

Introduction I always wondered who has better memory. So, I wanted to do it for my project, and see what comes up.

Background Information According to Wikipedia.com, memory is a persons ability to store, retain, and recall information or memories from someone’s past. What I did my experiment over was if a person can read off a long list of words or do something, and another person can listen and then be able to remember a large amount of the words that were given. I have always wanted to know if Gender would affect it to. So, that is the question I decided to do.

Hypothesis I think that it does not matter if you are a boy or a girl. That it just depends on how much you exercise your brain.

Materials My computer, Girls and Boys, Paper, pencil or pen, and Clip board

Procedure Get all the girls and boys together Read them the words a couple of times Then have them listen to two songs that most of them know Then after the song have them list as many words as they can

Results No. 1 Name Jacob: 7 Bobby: 6 Jadye: 9 Brityn: 8 Breckyn: 10 Chase: 7 Cara: 7 Lindsey: 8 Gus: 7 Kendrah: 3 Dallas: 5 Dylan: 7 Shandi: 4 Haylie: 7 Zane: 11 Kandra: 9 Alex: 3

Results No. 2 Name: Dylan: 14 Chase: 13 Gus: 7 Jacob: 8 Dallas: 6 Jadye: 10 Lindsey: 11 Shandi: 8 Brityn: 11 Kendrah: 15 Haylie: 15 Cara: 12 Kandra: 12 Breckyn: 12 Taryn: 8 Zane: 10 Alex: 4

Conclusion What I think happened was that it just depended on the person and if they were paying attention. I also noticed that some of the people did not understand some of the words I said. Because when I was looking at my results some of the people I tested put words that were not on the list, but were similar to some of the words. Some of the words were nothing like the words that were on the list. So, I believe my hypothesis was half correct. It does matter if you use your brain but it also matters if people are listening when you say the words. Or if the person saying the words is speaking in a loud and clear voice.

Possible Causes of Error If the person was mumbling that was telling the students the words. Or if the people that were being tested did not care or pay attention.

Possible Applications It can be applied to life when a boy or girl wants to know if they have better memory. As you can see by my tests it does not matter with jr. high kids.

Further Research On this website I found it says that woman tend to have better memory. They tested it themselves and found that the woman remembered stuff like the anniversary's.

Acknowledgements I would like to thank Mrs. Riffel for letting me do this project. And I would like to thank my science class for taking my project seriously. I would also like to thank Mrs. Proffitt, for letting me test again when Mrs. Riffel was not here.
