2 Context Historically a teaching area Well connected to industry, as provider of graduates A Generalist degree Specialised areas Development of research activities Faced with reducing funding Faced with competition with the “hard science” model Need to attract high quality PhD students

3 Funded versus not funded research Research in the hard sciences is costly => $$$$ is used as an indicator Research in Business is not costly => hard to be seen as research active – Publication of paper in A journals – Search for research funding on a par with the Hard Sciences – Funding is required to attract PhD students But funded research is more complicated

4 Sources of funding Enterprise Ireland Industrial Development Authority Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) The Irish Research Councils – IRCSET and IRCHSS Europe (FP7, ERC etc…)

7 conclusion Research income spent in 2011: € 1.3 m (up 50% on the previous year) Of this, Funding from industry in 2011: € 650K New funding awarded in 2011: € 2.2 m Of this, EU funding: € 450K 55% apply for research funding regularly Only 10% have never applied for funding 57% have acted as PI, 25% as collaborators 50% are actively supervising PhD students

8 Research is a developing area Convince staff that research is important Find revenue models that are viable and work Ensure that the structure is adequate for supporting staff researching and lecturing …
