Geography By Bethany Parkinson 9MT

A rock is a compact mass of mineral matter. There are three main type's of rocks! Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary

 Igneous rocks are formed from Volcanoes.  They are formed underground by the trapped, cooled magma.  They are also formed above the ground when the volcanoes erupts and the magma cools.

Examples of igneous rocks:  Examples of igneous rocks are basalt, granite, scona, pumice and obsidan. Pumice Basalt

 The most common igneous rocks are granite and basalt.  Granite is used for kitchen worktops and fire surrounds.

 Sedimentary Rocks are formed under water.  They are made up of layers of bits of eroded earth in lakes.  These layers form into rocks over a period of time.

Types of Sedimentary Rocks: Some examples of sedimentary rocks are shale, Sandstone,Gypsum, Limestone, Coul and Conglome rale. Sandstone Limestone

Uses for Sedimentary Rocks: Sedimentary rocks such as sand stone are often used by builders for decoration on window surrounds and windowsills. Coal is the most common sedimentary rock and is used to burn for heat.

Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been changed by heat and pressure. Metamorphic rocks were once igneous or sedimentary but have been changed.

Schist and Gnesis are both types of metamorphic rocks. Gnesis Schist

Uses for Metamorphic Rocks: Marble which is a metamorphic rock is used for wall and floor tiles. It is also used for fireplaces. Slate is another metamorphic rock which is used for roofs on buildings. Metamorphic rocks are tough and resistant.

Weathering is when the rocks are broken down by different types of weather. Freeze thaw weathering is when water gets into the crack of the rocks and it freezes. Repeated freezing and thawing weakens the rock and splits it into pieces. Weathering is most common in mountainous areas.

Erosion is the breakdown of the rocks through their contact with water, ice, heat or anything which rubs against the rocks. Erosion changes the shapes of the rocks and their texture.

Message from Mr Manson A simple but very effective design for your work Bethany I love the way that you have broken each rock type into 3 sections and explained each part individually. Some really good work and presentation – well done A1
