The President’s Airplane

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  Welcome to my classroom! ◦ I’m Mrs. Schott  I homeschooled my 3 children all the way through high school graduation ◦ I think it will be fun to learn about the President’s airplane today  We will also learn a little bit about his helicopter, Marine One

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  Why is the President’s airplane called Air Force One? ◦ The Air Force is the flying branch of the military, and any plane that the President steps onto becomes ‘Air Force One’ ◦ If the President gets onto an Army airplane, that plane is called Army One ◦ When the President gets onto his helicopter, it’s called Marine One There are two special planes that are both used by the President as Air Force One. They have tail numbers 28000 and 29000.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  What type of airplane is Air Force One ◦ Air Force One is a Boeing 747-200B  Boeing is the airplane company that builds the plane  747 is the kind of airplane  It is very big – as tall as a six story building, and as long as a city block  It has 3 different levels  The front of the plane is tall where the extra level is Air Force One has 4,000 square feet of space. That’s larger than most people’s houses.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  What does it look like? It’s a really big plane that has the American flag on the tail, the Seal of the President, and the words, “United States of America” painted on both sides.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved This older Air Force One plane is parked inside the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  Who flies Air Force One When the President flies, his trip is a military mission. The pilots and crew are from the Air Force, and it’s hard to get picked to be part of the crew. The Presidential Seal appears on the side of the plane. This is an older Boeing 707.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  The Pilot, co-pilot, cabin crew and food service people all have to go through special security to be on board ◦ The food service crew have to secretly shop for groceries at many different markets  No one can know that the food is for Air Force One  Enemies might try to put bad things in the food to make the President sick

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved This transport plane will deliver the President’s special armored limousine and other staff cars to his destination. Everything will be waiting for him when he arrives. The President always flies with the ‘football’ – a special suitcase with launch codes for America’s nuclear weapons. An Army officer carries the football on the ground, and an Air Force officer guards it on board the plane.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  What type of special equipment does it have? ◦ Communications  85 phone lines  28 phone lines that are extra secure so that no one can break into them and listen to the President’s conversations with other world leaders  Fax machines  Computer connections  19 televisions Air Force One can jam enemy radar and shoot flares to keep enemy missiles from hitting it. It’s definitely a military airplane!

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  What type of special equipment does it have ◦ Conference/dining room ◦ Quarters for the president and the first lady ◦ An office area for senior staff members ◦ An office that can be used as a doctor’s office – there is always a doctor on board Air Force One ◦ Work and rest areas for the presidential staff, media representatives and Air Force crews ◦ Two galleys that can provide 100 meals at once  There is room to store 2,000 meals in case the plane has to be in the air for a long time and cannot land.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  What type of special equipment does it have ◦ Air Force One can be refueled while it’s flying!  That way the President can keep on going if it’s not safe to land  The President has his own exercise room on board  There is room for 70 passengers and 26 crew members  Members of the media have their own separate area so that they don’t bother the President

 Before World War II, American Presidents didn’t travel very far from hom ◦ Travel was harder and more dangerous ◦ Took too long  1943 Franklin Roosevelt became first President to fly, taking a plane to North Africa for a war time meeting  He took the plane because German boats might  have attacked his boat. The flight went so well  that presidents have been flying ever since.

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  1958 First jets – Boeing 707’s – were used for president Eisenhower  There was a mix up near an airport between the President’s plane and a commercial airliner – To make it very clear which plane carried the President, it was called Air Force One

Founders Academy 2012 – All Rights Reserved  1962 – President Kennedy received Boeing 707 planes that could travel far ◦ He chose the blue and white design that is still used ◦ President Kennedy’s plane flew him to Dallas for a campaign speech where he was shot and killed ◦ His body was flown back to Washington later that day. Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President on ◦ that flight back to D.C.
