What is sexual abuse? Any sexual act without consent. Why should any form of sexual abuse be reported to the police?

2 Children and sexual abuse
Children may have a difficult time realizing or admitting they are being sexually abused Incest – sexual activity between family members who are not husband and wife

3 What are some examples of sexual harassment?
Definition: any unwanted remark, behavior, or touch that has sexual content What are some examples of sexual harassment? Sexual harassment is most dangerous when the harasser holds a position of power, such as a doctor, teacher, boss, or older friend of the family.

4 Examples of Sexual Harassment
*Telling unwanted sexual stories or jokes *Making sexual remarks about a person’s clothing and the way it fits on the person’s body * Staring at a person’s body or body parts *Continuously asking a person out or sending gifts, s, or love notes after he or she asked you to stop *Touching, patting, or pinching a person in a sexual way *Standing too close to or brushing up against a person’s body *Making sexual gestures *Offering the person something he or she needs in return for sex

5 How should we respond to Sexual Harassment?
Tell the harasser to stop The person may not know they are making you feel uncomfortable. Report the harassment If the harassing continues after you have told them to stop.

6 Sexual Assault and Rape
What is sexual assault? Sexual activity in which force or the threat of force is used. It can range from forced kissing to pulling off clothes and grabbing body parts. What is rape? An extreme form of sexual assault Forced sexual intercourse What is date rape or “acquaintance rape”? Forced sexual intercourse by someone the victim knows

7 Protecting yourself from Date Rape
*When going on a date, know who the person is, where you are going, and what you will be doing. Make sure friends and family know this information too. *Don’t be alone with your date. Go on dates in public places. *Go on double dates or group dates. *Do not accept drugs or alcohol. *Do not allow anyone to have an opportunity to put drugs in your beverage. *Be wary of meeting anyone on the Internet. *Know where a phone is at all times. *Set limits, and communicate these limits clearly and firmly ahead of time.

8 Effects of sexual assault and rape
Physical May experience injuries such as bruises, cuts, and broken bones May be exposed to pregnancy and STDs Emotional May feel guilt and shame May have trouble sleeping May suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder

9 Belief vs. Reality “Only young, beautiful people are raped.”
People of all ages are victims of rape “Men and boys are never raped.” 1 out of every 10 victims of rape is male “People who wear sexy clothes are asking to be raped.” It doesn’t matter what a victim wears. No one asks to be raped. “Rape is an act of sexual frustration.” Rape is an act of power and control. “Most rapes are committed by someone unknown to the victim.” Most rapes are committed by a person known to the victim. (Austin There were 253 rapes. 70% of those were family members or friends.)

10 Protecting yourself: Trust your gut feeling
At home Make sure all windows and doors are locked Don’t open the door to strangers Don’t hide spare key in obvious place Get a dog. On the street Don’t go out alone By people you know Know the signs of abusive people Be careful about people you meet on the internet Avoid people who are hostile or disrespectful

11 Help after sexual assault
Make sure you are away from further harm Call for help Don’t change anything about your body or environment – don’t shower or go to the bathroom – don’t wash or comb your hair – don’t take a shower – don’t clean up Ask someone to take you to the hospital Seek therapy or counseling
