1 Agenda 9-9-14 1. Review the text from Monday pages 66-67. 2. Preview the reading for today on pages 68- 71. 3. Read pages 68-71 and take “directed” notes. Objectives The students will read for comprehension and analysis. After reading the text, the students will be able to analyze the text for specific literary techniques such as sensory details and author’s purpose.

2 Agenda 9-10-14 1. Finish the notes and reading from pages 68-71. 2. Create a paragraph incorporating quotes as the supporting details. 3. Pair and share the paragraphs. Objectives The students will be able to analyze literature and create complete paragraphs using concrete details and quotes as support within the paragraph. The students will also be able to understand the author’s purpose for writing a piece of literature.

3 Agenda 9-11-14 1. Complete the paragraph with textual support from 9-10. 2. Share the paragraph with a partner. 3. Begin working on another paragraph that is focused on textual evidence and the purpose of the author. Objectives The students will be able to analyze literature and create complete paragraphs using concrete details and quotes as support within the paragraph. The students will also be able to understand the author’s purpose for writing a piece of literature. The students will be able to distinguish and analyze the following literary techniques: autobiography, biography, rhetorical question, topic sentence, supporting sentences.

4 Agenda 9-12-14 1. Introduce “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Take notes and complete definitions (page 88-92). 2. Complete the open- note quiz covering The Life of Olaudah Equiano. Objectives Students will be able to display their knowledge of literature (comprehension), analyze literary techniques, and genres of literature.

5 9-15-14 1. Review the background information and power point on Jonathan Edwards. (Notes) 2. Read the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” on pages 88-92. 3. Find 4 examples of imagery in the text and provide insight into “why” did he use these specific images. (What was his purpose?) Objectives The students will read for comprehension and analysis. After reading the text, the students will be able to analyze the text for specific literary techniques such as the use of imagery.

6 Agenda 9-16-14 1. Create a complete paragraph using quotes and MLA documentation. Topic: Explain how Jonathan Edwards uses imagery in the essay “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” 2. Complete the study questions for “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Objectives The students will be able to analyze literature and create complete paragraphs using concrete details and quotes as support within the paragraph. The students will also be able to understand the author’s purpose for writing a piece of literature.

7 Agenda 9-17-14 1. Read and take notes over the handout “A Brief History of the Salem Witch Trials.” 2. Watch a short video titled “The Crucible Background Information.” 3. Answer the questions from the video on your notes. 4. Continue to take notes on “How to Spot a Witch.” Objective The students will be able to compare historical events through literature (allegory). The students will be able to understand the atmosphere and culture of a piece of literature.

8 Agenda 9-18-14 1. Complete the notes on “How to Spot a Witch.” 2. Watch the video from Monty Python “How to Spot a Witch” (satire). 3. Using the literary handbook, define the literary terms from class. 4. Begin reading Act I of The Crucible (pages 1025- 1031). Objective The students will be able to draw conclusions on significant themes in a piece of literature. The students will become familiar with the historical context of a piece of literature (The Crucible).
