3 The National standards “ the ability to read, write and speak in English and to use mathematics at a level necessary to function at work and society in general”

4 Numeracy covers the ability to Understand and use mathematical information Calculate and manipulate mathematical information Interpret results and communicate mathematical information

5 Literacy covers the ability to Speak, listen and respond Read and comprehend Write to communicate

6 National Standards and Qualifications The national standards for adult literacy and numeracy are specified at three levels  Entry level  Level 1  Level 2 Entry level is further split into three sub levels  Entry 1  Entry 2  Entry 3 Levels 1 and 2 are aligned to the Key/Essential Skills in  Communication  Application of Number

7 National Standards and Qualifications The three levels of National standards corresponds to the levels of demand of qualifications  Certificate in literacy/numeracy all entry levels  Certificate in literacy/numeracy levels 1 and 2  Key/Essential Skills in communication levels 1 and 2  Key/Essential Skills in Application of Number levels 1 and 2

8 The core curriculum Based on the national standards for literacy and numeracy Describes the content of what should be taught Assists colleagues to meet the individual needs of learners Assists in developing learning programmes by  Using information from diagnostic assessment to identify learners skills  Drawing elements from the curriculum into the learning plan and assessment regime  Finding relevant applications for learners to practice skills  Following progression through the standards and the curriculum elements to build formative and summative assessment into the learning plan

9 Using the Core Curriculum Each standard is detailed to the core curriculum The core curriculum is broken down into the skills and knowledge required to meet each standard The core curriculum details  Examples of relevant tasks  Sample activities to develop skills  Guidance on techniques and approaches
