 Jane Austen  Born December 16, 1775  At the Steventon Rectory Hampshire, England

Had 6 brothers and one sister, Cassandra. Jane was extremely close to her sister and many of her stories revolve around the strong relationship between her heroine and another female, usually a sister or a cousin.

Sense & Sensibility Published in 1811 – Jane’s first novel About three sisters and their love affairs.

Pride & Prejudice Published 1813 – The story of Elizabeth Bennett and her famous Mr. Darcy. Mrs. Austen’s most famous novel.

Mansfield Park Published 1814 – A story about a young girl named Fanny who goes to live with some wealthy relatives and falls in love with a young man who is in love with another.

Emma Published 1815 – A young, rich woman, Emma, plays matchmaker for all of her willing and unwilling friends.

Persuasion Published 1817 – Anne is the third daughter of a titled but poor father. When she falls in love with a Naval officer, her family disapproves, and proceeds to convince her that he is not worthy of her. But can love win the day.

 A little more about Miss Austen  Although Miss Austen wrote many wonderful love stories, she never married.  She is rumored to have been in love, even attempting to run away and elope.  Miss Austen died at age 41.

 Death of a Star  July 18, 1817 of Addison’s or Hodgkin’s disease (supposedly)  She is buried at Winchester Cathedral in Winchester, Hampshire, England  Her last 2 novels were published after her death by her brother, Henry

  The reason that Miss Austen is one of my favorite authors is her ability to develop her characters so that they seem real and become a part of who you are as a reader.  Her way of describing the beautiful scenes in her books helps to transport you to that time and place.  And of course, her use of a smart, self-assured main female character who is generous in spirit helps create lasting impressions that live on long after you are finished reading her stories. Summary
