How did you do? 1 - 3 – You need to get into gear and learn your stuff! You are not going to be a BGT hit with that score. 4 – 6 – Not bad, you are in with a chance. Ant and Dec may just back you. 7 – 8 – That’s more like it. You could be onto a winner. Pudsey did it and he’s a dog! 9 – 10 – That’s major league, celebrity status. Give yourself a pat on the back because you are amazeballs!

Remember what the exam is all about 1.You have to read an extract and make decisions about how to answer the question. Then, answer it in just 20 minutes. 2.You have to choose between two questions, plan an answer and write a longer essay. All that in just 40 minutes! 3.You have to read your answers to make sure that they make sense – and if you have written enough you probably will be struggling to find time because your hour is up!

Revision means reading the text again and thinking about what is going on in the background as well as on the stage.

Some people prospered…

Bur not everyone lived like the Birling’s

What message is JB Priestley trying to get across in his play? Think about the final speech made by the inspector - find it in the text. Make a decision. How has the opinion of the inspector been used here? How could you weave this speech into a comment about what the author is actually trying to say about social responsibility?

Try the following essay question You need to pick out key words and plan an answer. Remember it is worth 20 marks so you need to write enough to earn those marks but you also need to keep focused and not merely re- tell the story.

Re-telling is not focused and does not help you to show the examiner how you came by your ideas! Just a thought … some students confuse re- telling with giving examples. There is a difference. Giving an example is using a selected event (it could be something a character says or does or something that happens) from the text and using it to support your own ideas. PEEing can help but PEE with attitude!

What aspects of British society does the play criticise? Write about: Things that JB Priestley, through the inspector, sees as bad. Things various characters think of as important. Your views on which things you might agree with.

Structure your answer Start with – JB Priestley uses the inspector to show what he believes is bad about British society. Write about the attitudes of the characters and how they react to the death of Eva Smith. Make comments about how the inspector uses the characters to show how they had not considered how their behaviour had affected other people. End with a comment about how you feel about the ideas JB Priestley was trying to show.
