Method of Administering Medication Kevin Murphy

Administration Methods One way to administer a drug is to taking it orally either by pills, capsules, or by drinking a liquid. Intravenous (IV) which administers the medication directly into the blood. Intramuscular injection which is directly into a muscle. Intratumoral injection which is directly into a tumor You can use a cream that you rub onto your skin.

History of Administering Drugs Orally taking medication has been around since ancient Egypt. In 1853 a surgeon invented a small syringe. In 1935 the slow drip was first used which is a continuous method of transfusion. In 1953 first mass-produced disposable syringe and needle was developed for the mass administration of one million American children with the new polio vaccine. From 1970 to 1980 numerous controlled drug delivery capsules where invented. By 2010 there were numerous long relief medications that can last up to 24 hours.

Current Day Delivery Systems At the present time, there are a huge number of drug delivery technologies. Today, drug delivery companies are engaged in the development of multiple platform technologies for; controlled release, delivery of large molecules, liposome's, taste-masking, oral fast dispersing dosage capsules or gels, and technology for insoluble drugs. Another delivery technologies are artificial DNA nanostructures, biodegradable particles.

Future Direction In the next 10 to 20 years, protein and peptide based drugs will constitute more than half of the new drugs going onto the market. Gene therapy is also expected to emerge as one of the major ways of treating diseases. Doctors will replace a mutated gene with a therapeutic gene. Biodegradable polymeric delivery technologies will be longer lasting. Scientists are also trying to make medicated inhalants that you can breathe in by using an inhaler.

Limitations Often large molecules degrade rapidly in the blood stream and they have a limited ability to cross cell membranes and generally cannot be delivered orally. Liposomes tend to have stability issues and are hard to create in large scales. Sterilization limitations when using nano particles. Diminished potency due to drug metabolism in the body
