MS is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, which is the protective covering around nerve cells
This causes nerve signals to slow down or stop
Nerve damage is caused by inflammation which happens when immune cells attack the nervous system
The cause is unknown
Hypotheses: Genetics, virus, environment, or some combination of the three
