World Web Find the other countries that are the same colour as your card. Form three circles around one another (pink in centre, green then yellow) Hold on to the string when your country is identified and don’t let go. Make observations about the types of connections you hear and the countries involved as the web in created.

World Web Debrief What do you notice about the web? What patterns did you notice while the web was being created? Are all countries equal participants in this web? What has enabled this web to form over the years? How is this web reflective of the real world? If 1-2 of the first world countries are forced to drop out of the web, what impacts may this have? Are these impacts felt equally?

Your Connections Good Morning World We are (almost) all connected, but we are not equal players in this game There are pros and cons to globalization for all participants, however the benefits are not shared equally Views on the benefits and drawbacks of globalization depend on the position, and thus perspective, of the participants involved

How is this happening? Shift Happens

You Define It! Join our discussion on Today’s Meet www.todaysmeet.com/WIPercy As a group, define the term “globalization” based on the simulation we just completed Don’t send your answer until I ask you Now brainstorm as many different examples of globalization that you can think of

Globalization “Globalization is the trend toward greater interconnectedness of the world’s financial, economic, technological, political, cultural sociological, ecological and geographical systems” Clark and Wallace, 2001

Types of Globalization 1) Read pages 25-28 in your textbook Global Connections Create a chart in your notebook, or a popplet online, to identify the following information about the 8 types of globalization: Key Characteristics 2 examples 1 benefit 1 drawback 1-2 connections to other types of globalization

McDonald’s Case Study 2) Read the case study “Globalization and the Golden Arches” on page 29 and answer questions 1b, 2 and 3a-c

Supporters and Critics Read pages 30-31 in your textbook to identify the benefits and drawbacks of globalization Create chart in your notes to compare the views of globalization supporters (benefits) and critics (drawbacks) Leave room for us to add to your chart

In the real world… Moodle Glossary Partner Activity Find a specific example of how globalization is having a positive or negative impact on the world, depending on what you have been assigned. You can choose a pro/con from your chart to get started. Write one paragraph that briefly identifies the real-world example and explain why it is positive or negative (for people, environment, etc.). Identify the type(s) of globalization your example represents. Select a website, video clip or visual to accompany your written work. Post this to the Moodle so we have a list of examples of both the positive and negative aspects of globalization. You may want to start at www.globalization101.org or www.globalenvision.org to get some ideas.www.globalization101.org www.globalenvision.org

Spread of Education Owing to increased social and political connections between Kenyan and Canadian educational institutions, thousands of students in Kenya now receive important HIV/AIDS prevention education. Canadian public health experts and teacher have been instrumental in training Kenyan teachers. In this example we can see sociological, political and geographical globalization in action.

4 Corners Informal Debate “Globalization offers the world our best chance to solve the issues we face” 1)In your group, do some preliminary research on the perspective of the country you have been assigned. Use your notes, seminar notes, textbook and online sources. Choose where your country stands on the statement. 2)Develop 3+ arguments to support your stance 3)Debate and reflect

Your Thoughts In your opinion, does globalization have more positive or negative attributes? Write 1-2 paragraphs to explain your perspective.
