Writing Rebuttals

Ethos  To make yourself sound more credible, it is important to present an opposing viewpoint and then “rebut” that view.  To rebut a viewpoint is to explain what is wrong with that point of view.

Example Some experts believe that a low-carb diet is healthy, but the American Heart Association still recommends a low-fat diet as the best way to stay healthy.

Transitions  Transition words are key to a good rebuttal. Ex. While many people purchase animals at a pet store, it is much more compassionate to adopt an animal from your local Humane Society.

Practice 1. Tanya has a huge crush on Ryan Seacrest. I think he is lame. 2. Some people are crazy about Starbucks White Mochas. I prefer Caramel Frappuccinos. 3. Mom says it would look tacky to get my nose pierced. I think it would look refined.

Writing Rebuttals Choose one of the following and create a t-chart showing the pros and cons of the statement:  Schools should not be co-ed.  Teens/Kids should be paid for household chores.  College athletes should be paid.  RHS students should wear uniforms.

Triple Chunk Now write a triple chunk about the topic you choose. Your final piece of evidence and commentary should be a rebuttal.
