The pose became known as Lincoln's “Cooper Union” photograph. “To this place and the kindness of these people, I owe every thing. Here I have lived a quarter of a century, and have passed from a young to an old man. Here my children have been born, and one is buried. I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than (George Washington faced)… I bid you affectionate farewell.” Lincoln’s great speech

5 Gettysburg Address “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It Is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” This studio photograph of Lincoln was taken on November 8, 1863, just ten days before he spoke at Gettysburg Most African Americans liked the idea of being able to enlist in the Union army.

6 John Wilkes Booth was the president’s assassin. Born in Maryland, he was a well- known actor of the time. “The president is shot!” Thousands watch as Lincoln’s funeral procession makes its way up Broadway in New York City.

7 After Lincoln’s death, artists often pictured him with George Washington. Washington had been named the “father of our country.” Lincoln was called the nation’s “savior.” One of the most important is the Lincoln National Monument.
