2 Childhood  Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809 in Kentucky.  He was the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Lincoln.  When Lincoln was nine, his mother Nancy died  His older sister, Sarah, took charge of caring for him until their father remarried in 1819  He was mostly self-educated and was an avid reader.

In autumn, he becфme engaged to Mary Todd. 1842 - On November 4th, Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield. 1843 - On August 1st, his first child, Robert Todd Lincoln, was born. 1846 - March 10th, a son, Edward Baker Lincoln was born. 1853 - On April 4th, his fourth son, Thomas (Tad) Lincoln was born

4 1844 - In May, the Lincoln family moved into a house in Springfield, Illinois, bought for $1,500. In December, he dissolved his law partnership with Logan, then set up his own practice. 5 May 18, 1860 - Abraham Lincoln was nominated to be the Republican candidate for President of the United States. November 6, 1860 - Abraham Lincoln was elected as 16 th President of the United States, and was the first Republican. He received 180 of 303 possible electoral votes and 40 percent of the popular vote. March 4, 1861 - Inauguration ceremonies was held in Washington, D.C. President Lincoln delivered his First inaugural address. April 12, 1861 - At 4:30 a.m., Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The Civil War began. Career

6 People called Lincoln “honest Abe”. They brought their problems to him and trust him to do what was right and honest. He was also an excellent speaker. In the U.S. Senate in 1858, Lincoln delivered his ”House Divided Speech”: "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free…” This speech made him famous as a fighter against slavery. Career

7 Lincoln had to lead the country through the four terrible years of war. He wanted the northern and southern states to stay together. In 1865 the North won the Civil War. April 9, 1865 - The Civil War concluded as General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate Army to General Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The Civil War

8 September 22, 1862 - The President issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves. January 1, 1863 - President Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in territories held by Confederates. Lincoln hated slavery. This document made all the slaves free. This was a great event in the history of the USA. The Emancipation Proclamation

9 -April 14, 1865 - Lincoln and his wife Mary saw the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater. -About 10:13 p.m., during the third act of the play, John Wilkes Booth shot the President in the head. Ford's Theater The President’s final at Ford’s Theatre

10 The house in which president Lincoln died The President’s box at Ford’s Theatre Doctors attended to the President in the theater then moved him to a house across the street. He never regained consciousness. The President’s final at Ford’s Theatre
