Welcome to Communication in the Classroom EJ 417 Wednesdays from 12:00-12:50 Fridays from 9:00-10:50

Today’s Class (1)Introduce myself to you. (2)Briefly discuss the aims of this course. (3) Talk about our class style.

1. Improving Communication One of the aims of this course is to improve our communication (in English)so that we are more effective in getting our meaning across. As a teacher this means giving instruction (in English) in ways that your students will be able to comprehend.

Word Skills In the first part of the course we will look at Word Skills. Teachers should be comfortable discussing many aspects of words in English with their students such as collocations, rhyme, spelling, definition, synonyms, antonyms, and pronunciation. Teachers should also incorporate skills-based lessons in their curriculum to help their students become comfortable talking about words as well.

Communication Strategies In the process of instructing students, teachers will be misunderstood especially if they are speaking in a language that is not their or their class’s first language. We look at ways to clear up communication using comprehension checks, clarification questions, and rephrasing.

Presenting Vocabulary Teachers are constantly discussing vocabulary with students. We will look at ways to discuss vocabulary students and the importance of using English to explain English terms.

Modifying Output Teachers who give instruction in English are a rich source of meaningful input for their students. We will look at ways to modify what we say so that we Provide rich and varied input for our students.

Classroom Activities We will look at a large number of activities that you can use in your classroom. We will look at ways to combine elements of structure, function, content, and skills into our curriculum.

The Ultimate Goal My ultimate goal is to give you the confidence to interact with your students so that you will conduct a greater portion of your class in English in a natural, flowing, native-like manner instead of just talking about English in Korean.
