Science - Coronal heating - Coronal structure / dynamics - Elementary processes in Magnetic Reconnection Mission instruments - Optical Telescope / Vector Magnetograph (SOT) - X-ray Telescope (XRT) - EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) Launch Date: Summer 2005, with ISAS M-V-7 Orbit: Sun synchronous altitude ~ 600 km Weight: ~ 900 kg SOLAR-B

Lower atmosphere (Photosphere/Chromosphere ) governs the dynamics of the upper atmosphere (Corona) via magnetic field lines Structure of the solar atmosphere SOLAR-B

A Coordinated Set of Mission Instruments Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) - 50-cm diameter telescope for the vector magnetic- field observations: Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) [J] Focal Plane Package (FPP) [US] X-Ray Telescope (XRT) - Grazing-incidence X-ray telescope with a 2Kx2K CCD camera covering the full Sun EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) - Grating spectrometer for coronal velocity and temperature diagnostics SOLAR-B

Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) X-ray Telescope (XRT) EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) SOLAR-B

International Collaboration ISAS (Japan) : Integration of S/C; Launch & Operation Mission Instruments: SOT (optics), XRT (camera), EIS (I/f to S/C) NASA (US): SOT (focal plane package), XRT (optics / mech.), EIS (optics components), NASA polar station(s) PPARC (UK): EIS (structure, detectors & electronics) ESA: Polar station(s) for data downlink Joint Operations and Data Analysis SOLAR-B

Current System Schedule 2001 : PM Electric I/F Test Subsystem MTM/TTM Fabr. & Test 2002 : System MTM Test System TTM Test 2003 : Subsystem Flight Model Fabrication 2004 : System Integration & I/F Test System Final Checking 2005 Aug / Sep : Launch Operation SOLAR-B  Launch slippage of one year expected !!

OTA FPP EIS OBU XRT SOLAR-B MTM Test (2002 May - July)

TTM Test (2002 Oct - Nov) SOLAR-B Generally in good agreement with math model predictions. No serious system-level problems found.

Areas of Problems Identified in MTM/TTM 1. Micro-Vibrations caused by IRU-A & -B (Gyros)  SOT image blurring at a level greater than 0.2 arcsec Countermeasures: 1) IRU-A & -B improvement, 2) move IRU-A to Bus, 3) design change of OTA sub-reflector stay structure.  S/C pointing stability worsens due to deformation 2. Too severe mechanical conditions for some components 3. FM fabrication delay in some bus components 4. Tight schedule for EIC/MIC, Final Checking, & Launch

Additional activities related to 1) & 2) Acoustic test (for confirming modified component arrangement & measuring correspondent mechanical conditions) end of February Micro-vibration test (using modified OTA and dummy FPP, XRT, & EIS) middle of March Confirmation of IRU-A & -B disturbance levels reduction by middle of March Mechanical tolerance checking for some components by middle of March

Other problems we are facing with Shortage of ISAS budget, in general Interference with other programs in using test facilities and more...
