2 A Brief History January 2004 – CMGS Letter Reconvened CMGS MTO Committee (28.04.04) Follow up MTO meeting with Cyto MTOs (24.05.04) DH Workshop (24.06.04) - VRC Further meetings between MTOs and PBs AGTC formed and met 21.09.04

3 AGTC Remit To facilitate the regulation of MTOs in NHS Genetic diagnostic labs through the Voluntary Registration Council. Act as the registration body to assess the MTO applicants for regulation by the VRC. Future: Act as the professional lead on all matters relating to Technical Staff.

4 AGTC Members Marcus Allen, Chair – Birmingham (CMGS) Michelle Fenlon, Secretary – Birmingham (ACC) Janice Nunn, Vice-Chair – Sheffield (CMGS) Borghert Jan Borghmans, Registrar – Belfast (CMGS) Sarah King - Sheffield (ACC) Jane Cooper – Newcastle (CMGS) Frances Shaw – Cambridge (ACC) Clinical Scientist / Professional Body Representatives Tony Parkin – Nottingham (ACC – Chair) David Baty – Dundee (CMGS TAB – Chair)

5 AGTC Roles AGTC Member as Technical Lead on both the ACC Executive and the CMGS Executive – currently Michelle (ACC) and Marcus (CMGS) AGTC Member as Technical Lead on both ACC Education and Training Committee – Sarah & CMGS Training and Accreditation Board – Marcus Secretary (Michelle) & Registrar (BJ) will attend the VRC.

6 AGTC Roles (cont.) There are currently 6 MTO Committee members as Frankie has stepped down – planning to increase to 10. 5 ACC & 5 CMGS members The four officers, Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary & Registrar will each serve 3- year terms. Annual election of 1 ACC & 1 CMGS member

7 New AGTC Members Currently 6, require 4 new members. 1 CMGS & 3 ACC. Interested parties forward names along with brief summary of why you wish to join and what your appointment will offer the AGTC to Michelle.Fenlon@bwhct.nhs.uk ( by end of July). Michelle.Fenlon@bwhct.nhs.uk The 6 current members will then decide who to appoint.

8 What have the AGTC done so far? Genetic Technologists – proposed title at registration? Input into all paperwork for VRC - Articles of Association - Memorandum of Incorporation - Application form - Codes of conduct (both Council members & Registrants) - Fitness to practice procedures

9 What have the AGTC done so far? Produced all VRC paperwork relating to Genetic Technologists - Guidance notes - Entry routes - Assessment of Qualification & Competence forms - Scrutinisers forms

10 What have the AGTC done so far? Scope of Practice for Genetic Technologists Standards of Proficiency

11 What will the AGTC do next? Scrutinizing Application Forms (~400) - VRC Training 23.06.06 Involved in discussion on the future Education and Training of Genetic Technologists - participated in discussions with Professional Bodies, Department of Health & Skills for Health Prepare for application to HPC. Further promote the GT career & act as the Technical Lead for the Profession.
