2 MEDICAL TECHNICAL OFFICER healthcare scientist work in hospitals – speciality areas usually 9 to 5 5 grades – MTO 1 to MTO 5 (34) + training grades

3 MTO specialties pathology * nuclear medicine * cardiology * clinical measurements (bladder,oesop,rectal ) electro-mechanical engineering renal dialysis * medical illustration * bone densitometry * neurophysiology * operating dept practitioner pharmacy * vascular laboratory * vascular laboratory * audiology * = patient contact

4 ENTRY requirements 2yr training grade for BTEC medphys,phy meas/NVQ 3 healthcare phys meas – 4 GCSE (A-C) Eng, Maths, 2 sciences BTEC/A levels sciences/adv.GNVQ 3 science HNC/HND/BSc.Degree relevant science most depts. prefer staff to take higher specialist qualifications ( BSc./Pgrad.) in specialist areas

5 MTO (vascular technologist) qualifications 9 O, 3 A – BSc. Hons degree Pure and Applied Physics Dip Rad Imaging – nuclear medicine PGrad Cert Medical U/S – vascular technologist

6 MTO (vascular technologist) duties running, quality and development of vascular laboratory services- manage/train staff perform routine/complex u/s scans teach vascular u/s Leeds/Brad/Hudd Universities clinical supervisor – in/ext students external assessor – practical exam

7 VASCULAR TECHNOLOGIST perform, interpret and report non - invasive diagnostic tests on patients with arterial and venous disease colour flow ultrasound to assess blood flow pressure measurements

8 COLOUR FLOW ULTRASOUND codes and displays velocity RED - ARTERY BLUE - VEIN

9 PRESENTATIONS severe cramp on walking - due to narrowing in arteries of legs

10 COLOUR ULTRASOUND SCANNING

11 PRESENTATIONS VARICOSE VEINS locate and mark on the skin weak valve sites of the veins
