2 www.hee.nhs.uk Modernising Scientific Careers HCS represent about 5% of NHS workforce…… ….but they influence about 80% of all diagnostic decisions The total qualified (Band 5+) HCS workforce headcount is around 35,000  Life Sciences 15,855 (2,073)  Physiological Sciences 6,723 (454)  Physical Sciences & Biomed.Eng. 7,505 (559)  Unclassified HCS 4,998 (16%) About 26% of the HCS workforce is ill-defined – mainly because of inadequate coding choices available in the NWD and hence ESR Only 16 of the 40+ scientific specialisms are currently able to be coded satisfactorily in ESR A project is underway to modify the NWD and hence the ESR to allow coding of the whole HCS workforce – and aim to include informatics in future
