2 Origins of the Anna Lindh Foundation 1995: Beginning of the Barcelona Process aimed at developing Euro-Mediterranean relations around three spheres: Political: Common area of peace and stability through the reinforcement of political and security dialogue. Economic sphere: Zone of shared prosperity through an economic and financial partnership and the gradual establishment of a free trade zone. Cultural sphere: The rapprochement between peoples through a social, cultural and human partnership A Network of Networks

3 Anna Lindh Foundation: a Network of Networks Diverse civil society organisations in the Euro Mediterranean space as an area of co-operation, exchange, mobility, mutual understanding and peace. It has been established by 35 governments in 2005 in Alexandria Works today with 43 National Networks A Network of Networks

4 Role of the National Networks The Foundation shall function as a network of networks (Statutes Article XIII) as a network of civil society organisations working on intercultural dialogue bringing people and organisations together, spreading knowledge and sharing best practices promoting the visibility of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership contributing in an effective manner to the social, cultural and intellectual dimension of the Union for the Mediterranean in cooperation with the UN Alliance of Civilizations. 10 A Network of Networks During the next three years, the Anna Lindh Foundation will focus its action and most of its activities on the following strategic fields: Ideas and Ideologies Education Cultural Production Media Religion, Spirituality and Values Cities and diversity

11 Network Coordination and Development Phase II (2009-2011) A Network of Networks The strategic fields correspond to the Foundation’s core mission: developing the social, human and cultural dimension of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. They represent the principal areas in which the cultural and ideological debate is taking place throughout the Mediterranean region. Areas where a battle of ideas is being fought between those who advocate the need to build a common space, based on shared values, and those who use cultural and religious diversity to install an apology of the Clash of Civilisations, of populism and hatred.

12 Network Coordination and Development Phase II (2009-2011) A Network of Networks The Foundation is developing its Programme through: A Flagship Project currently being developed for each one of the strategic fields, coordinated directly by the Headquarters, in collaboration with National Networks and other strategic partners. Other activities, which must be consistent with the identified strategic fields. Calls for Proposals, delivering grants to annual projects or triennial programme of actions.

13 Network Coordination and Development Phase II (2009-2011) A Network of Networks Examples of ALF activities (still under development for concrete actions) - “Euromed Agora”; a group of politicians, intellectuals and influential personalities that will act as a permanent think tank for the Anna Lindh Foundation - Mobility of artists including travel grants and residences - Translation including research, training and support for translations of European and Arab literature - Education: continuation of on-going and development of new training programmes for teachers and youth leaders especially in the areas of Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Religious Diversity. - Cooperation with the “Biennale of Young Artists in Europe and the Mediterranean” – workshops and network meetings Members can propose long-term, sustainable and strategic ideas/ projects for initiatives to be implemented in direct cooperation with ALF (more specific criteria are being developed). The ALF Board of Governors is called to approve ALF activities after consultation with the Advisory Council.

14 Network Coordination and Development Phase II (2009-2011) A Network of Networks OBSERVATORY ON INTERCULTURAL TRENDS to analyse and better understand the trends of mutual perceptions in the region - Observing over and Registering the long-term trends related to coexistence among groups from different cultural backgrounds in the region - Analyzing and Explaining the data collected and the main findings, thanks to the expertise of individual experts or research institutes and the knowledge of actors engaged, and stimulating scientific and social debates on the observed phenomena. -Recommending and Guiding, acting as an advocate for the voice of citizens in the region and providing specialist recommendations to policy-makers and opinion leaders as well as guidelines for large-scale initiatives and action of the Foundation’s -For the year 2009, the output of this process will be the publication of an Annual Report on “The role of Media in Shaping Mutual Perceptions”, including concrete recommendations for action addressed to ALF network and civil society, decision and opinion makers.
