Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Installation Status Opening Remarks Overview, logistics Recent events, status Outlook, concerns Conclusions Jon Kotcher Collaboration Meeting October 11, 2000

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Opening Remarks  Installation/detector evolving very nicely u Huge progress on many fronts s Detectors delivered/mounted s Critical electrical & mechanical infrastructure installed – necessary ingredients s Cabling of all flavors (delicate, tricky) s Electronics (deliveries will remain problem) s Commissioning! (J. Yu) u Focus of hardware upgrade almost completely at DAB (SMT finishing up) s Tight organization, working well together u We are all indebted to excellent support staff s Buy them a cigar, cognac sometime…  Much left to do in time allotted u Some of it detailed work that can only go so quickly without unacceptable amount of risk u Not without concerns for March 1 startup s Will discuss later in talk  Two major “innovations” have opened up our ability to progress rapidly: u Split silicon into two halves u Put large pieces in place on final installation “runways” as early as possible s EF irons on platform, EMC trusses brought down to pit s (Awaited delivery of CFT)

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Since NIU Workshop  Fiber Tracker installed Thu/Fri, June 29-30 u Transport from Lab 3, light-tighting in Hi Bay, insertion into bore, transfer to final mounts u Went very smoothly s Used 2 days of the 2 wks we’d allotted u Surveyed into position s CFT well-centered on solenoid, axially and transversely s Solenoid ~ 5/8” south –Critical area, need clearance for CFT/CPS/CFT waveguides –Sophisticated “putty test” in inter-cryostat gap demonstrated ample space – quite definitive u Kudos to D0 Mechanical Group, CFT Group s Completion, installation represents major technical achievement u Starting gun for motion of large pieces back into position…  ECS on center beam Tues, July 11 u Surveyed, repositioned, resurveyed, … s Positioning constraints much tighter for Run 2 (beam pipe, silicon) s Some outstanding issues remain u Cryogenic hookup, recabling of ECS, beryllium beam pipe placed in CFT Barrel 1 s Bubble wrap, PVC, foam, purge

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Since NIU Workshop  After ECS, platform moved west, end irons picked up, returned 8/4 (one week – faster than anticipated)  Trusses brought down immediately thereafter, completed 8/15  VLPC cryostats installed 8/7, commissioned 8/17 u Working very reliably, without incident u Copper ground straps installed for electronic noise u Handful of production VLPC cassettes installed to do waveguide checkout s Data looks great – another important milestone  Waveguide installation ran into some snags u Spatial constraints btwn calorimeters at outer radius not properly accounted for u 4:1 model made of entire face, incl silicon cable runs u Waveguide running on south face completed this week s A necessary prerequisite for SMT-S installation s Actually will be ahead of schedule u Detailed modeling demonstrated need for more room for waveguides/silicon cables & services s Two inner H-disks will be moved 1.75” away from interaction point u Waveguide checkout continues, much progress s Using kludged stereo boards for front end

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Since NIU Workshop  All Forward Muon detectors complete (Sep) u Congratulations Dmitri, et al.  Forward Muon A-layer pixels and MDTs mounted u Manipulation, alignment of large pieces – manpower, effort u Mounting of full A-layer major accomplishment s Has typically required iteration – a worry for completion of full system s Final articulating drawbridges not yet in place  C-layer north MDTs installed, being surveyed into position u Lead time for turnaround of survey information can be painful  C-layer north pixel plane assembled on shield wall u Quite impressive (go see it) u Being surveyed, then “hung” into place on truss after rear C-layer MDTs positioned  Expect north truss ready to roll in to Collision Hall mid Oct, south truss mid Nov u Truss installation to Collision Hall begins Nov 13  Accelerator shutdown, warm up, low  retraction  System is progressing, but engineering is proving to be a significant bottleneck  4.5 months ain’t much time…

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Since NIU Workshop  Calorimeter electronics arriving u Almost 2 full quadrants of upgraded electronics available u Vendors an issue, as always  Purity of liquid argon in dewar 0.4 ppm   test cell, stand-alone test cryostat   measurements being taken now u Ready to be used to fill cryostats s Thanks to G. Sajot & Co.! u Considering filling prior to roll in s Purity monitoring & thermometry (C. Zeitnitz, Mainz), HV, electronics s Manpower, amount of activity an issue s Will be discussed in Yu’s commissioning mtg this week  Beam loss monitors, radiation sensors, Run 1 luminosity counters installed in Collision Hall (NIKHEF, Brown, others) u Readout, feedback to accelerator  Silicon is doing very well u Cabling of SMT-S finishing at SiDet within next two weeks u Expect SMT-S installed early November, SMT-N around Xmas u Noise, error rates on 70k channels at 10% test looks quite good u Talks by Zdrazil, Lehner on Friday

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Outlook, Concerns  Hardware: u Both SMT half-barrels should be in before roll in s Won’t be necessary to do in Collision Hall u B-layer pixels are in jeopardy s Design of mounting hardware not quite complete s If late, will likely require roll out to complete (crane) s Would be a blow (detectors complete) - pushing very hard u Alignment, positioning accuracy of detector elements far more stringent for Run 2 s Beryllium beam pipe + bellows, silicon, calorimeters… s Difficult problem - much thought, survey u Amount of work in limited space, time  Arrival of electronics for tracking & other systems is very, very late u Interface cards for silicon: start arriving mid-Nov u Adapter cards: partials Nov? u Power supplies for CFT AFE: Feb 12 (partials?) u 8-chip AFE boards for CFT: end Dec (RH), mid- Jan (LH) s 3-4 in hand til then, no partials s 12-chip AFE (stereo, preshowers): Spring u Completion of CAL BLS motherboards: mid-Feb u Level 2 trigger commissioned: 25 April s Alpha boards – smoke hasn’t settled here… u Vendors a canonical problem – much work focusing on expediting these orders, but… u Robust economy is not helping us

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Outlook, Concerns  Impossible to overstate delicacy of silicon hookup u Final connection of low mass cable must be made one and only one time s Full checkout upstream of adapter card prior to hookup of detector s Detectors damaged, fried with little effort – has been proven in the field by other exp’ts u Electronics will be trickling in u Dressing of inner cables very delicate, convoluted u Properly functioning interlocks an integral part of process (complex system) u Extreme care essential here u Parallel activities a worry s Locked gate at intercryostat gap! u Beginnings of commissioning team in place, needs coalescing u Si hookup will take a while – no corners can be cut s Need access to intercryostat gap, cathedral  Time allotted for detector commissioning time prior to roll in has all but disappeared u Replaced by electronics installation & hookup:  Being synched to accelerator downtimes for electronics installation & hookup in a system of this complexity will severely hamper our readiness for acquiring physics-quality data u Detector, front end, DAQ, online, trigger experts will be absolutely crucial

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Conclusions  D0 is doing extremely well, an excellent year for the hardware portion of upgrade u Si, CFT, Muon, Cal, infrastructure, online, commissioning  Systems are coming up, behaving as hoped in most cases  Serious, dedicated young people have been, and continue to be, instrumental in getting us there  Much remaining to do, activity in hall escalating organically – OK for moment, but approaching saturation u Spatial/temporal constraints may mean some things cannot get done prior to roll in  Pressure rapidly mounting u Danger now is breaking something, hurting somebody u Taking appropriate care more important than speed!

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Data Taking Position  Clamshells closed, shielding mid-piece extended, EF & calorimeters closed

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Calorimeter Access  Retraction of shielding mid-piece & EF travel allow access to region between calorimeters u FPS, ICD, LUM, SMT installation & cabling u CFT cabling on face of CC u Collision Hall access – servicing, repairs, etc. EF travel only 42/47” for Run 2

Collaboration Mtg Cotober 11, 2000 Access to B/C layers  Requires scaffolding supported off Collision Hall floor (not shown) u Small (~ 7”) footprint
