SI Units Le Syst è me International d ’ Unit é s (SI) is a modern version of the metric system based on a decimal system Le Syst è me International d ’ Unit é s (SI) is a modern version of the metric system based on a decimal system International System of Units in USA International System of Units in USA Understood throughout the world Understood throughout the world Each type of measurement has a base unit Each type of measurement has a base unit

SI Units Length = meter (m) Length = meter (m) Mass = gram (g) = amount of matter in an object Mass = gram (g) = amount of matter in an object Weight = Newton (N) = measure of gravitational force on an object Weight = Newton (N) = measure of gravitational force on an object

SI Units Time = second (s) = interval between 2 events Time = second (s) = interval between 2 events Temperature = Kelvin (K) = measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object Temperature = Kelvin (K) = measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object Kelvin = °C +273 Kelvin = °C +273 °C = Kelvin - 273 °C = Kelvin - 273 Example: 20 °C + 273 = 293 K Example: 20 °C + 273 = 293 K

What is scientific Notation? Scientific notation is a way of expressing really big numbers or really small numbers. Scientific notation is a way of expressing really big numbers or really small numbers. It is most often used in “scientific” calculations where the analysis must be very precise. It is most often used in “scientific” calculations where the analysis must be very precise.

Why use scientific notation? For very large and very small numbers, these numbers can be converted into scientific notation to express them in a more concise form. For very large and very small numbers, these numbers can be converted into scientific notation to express them in a more concise form. Numbers expressed in scientific notation can be used in a calculation with far greater ease. Numbers expressed in scientific notation can be used in a calculation with far greater ease.

Scientific notation consists of two parts: A number between 1 and 10 A number between 1 and 10 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,or 9 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,or 9 A power of 10 A power of 10 N x 10 z

How to convert into Scientific Notation 1. Rewrite all the digits as a number with only one digit in front of the decimal point and the rest of the digits after it. 2. Count the number of places you would have to shift the decimal point to get the original number back. If you had to move the decimal point to the left, the exponent of the power of ten is negative. If you had to move the decimal point to the left, the exponent of the power of ten is negative. If you had to move the decimal point to the right, the exponent of the power of ten is positive. If you had to move the decimal point to the right, the exponent of the power of ten is positive. http://www.stkate.edu/~ysng/CLASSES/Independent/Meti/scientificnotation.html

Examples Given: 289,800,000 Given: 289,800,000 Use: 2.898 (moved 8 places) Use: 2.898 (moved 8 places) Answer: 2.898 x 10 8 Answer: 2.898 x 10 8 Given: 0.000567 Given: 0.000567 Use: 5.67 (moved 4 places) Use: 5.67 (moved 4 places) Answer: 5.67 x 10 -4 Answer: 5.67 x 10 -4

To change scientific notation to standard form… Simply move the decimal point to the right for positive exponent 10. Simply move the decimal point to the right for positive exponent 10. Move the decimal point to the left for negative exponent 10. Move the decimal point to the left for negative exponent 10. (Use zeros to fill in places.)

Examples Given: 5.093 x 10 6 Given: 5.093 x 10 6 Answer: 5,093,000 (moved 6 places to the right) Answer: 5,093,000 (moved 6 places to the right) Given: 1.976 x 10 -4 Given: 1.976 x 10 -4 Answer: 0.0001976 (moved 4 places to the left) Answer: 0.0001976 (moved 4 places to the left)
