Self-report methods A set of methods in which respondents (participants) describe their own feelings/beliefs/thoughts/attitudes etc. – Interviews Unstructured Structured – Questionnaire surveys

Research methods and statistics We are learning about...We are learning how to... Qualitative and quantitative data. Self-report methods: unstructured interviews Gather psychological data. Notice and interpret patterns in research results. Critically compare research methods. Make links between psychological approaches and methods.

Interviews Data are gathered by questioning respondents and recording what they say. – Face to face/telephone/Skype – Computer mediated e.g. chat, email

Interviews Unstructured – the interviewer has few or no pre- prepared questions. Follow up questions depend on the PPs’ responses Structured – the interviewer has a list of pre- prepared questions from which they do not deviate Semi structured

Analysing qualitative data from unstructured interviews Following an unstructured interview, usually the researcher transcribes the recording. Analysis is then carried out on the transcript. – Produce a transcript of the interview excerpt on Moodle. You must aim to reproduce as words on paper exactly what transpired between interviewer and respondent.

Analysing qualitative data from unstructured interviews Use content analysis to turn it into quantitative data. Use a qualitative analysis strategy e.g. – Thematic analysis – Discourse analysis – Grounded theory research process

Which factors might threaten the validity of interview data?

Potential limitations of interviews (1) Characteristics of the interviewer can influence responses e.g. – Gender; – Ethnicity. (2) Interviewer may cue the PP to respond in particular ways (interviewer expectancy). (3) Response set e.g. social desirability bias

Potential strengths of interviews What might you get from interviews that you can’t get from other methods? What might be particularly good about unstructured interviews?

Outside class In RMS questions book, Q9. leave out (d) & (h). Advance preparation Qs on Moodle: experiments.
