Inheritance By: Aleksandra Premovic and Christopher Wright

Selective Breeding ● The process of taking two species of your choice and their desirable traits to make a different breed. ● Example: Rottweiler and German Shepard for their intellectual traits. ● Example: Pit bull and American Bull dog for their physical traits. ● Example: Lion and Tiger for their physical strength and ability.

Advantages ● Able to produce stronger and efficient animals such as cow that can produce a larger amount of milk or meat. ● Can help animals survive in more severe environments and help preserve human food supplies.

Disadvantages ● Breeding two alike animals with bad traits could result in danger. ● The species could have a genetic disease and pass it down the line to any other animal it is breed with.

Inbreeding ● Mating closely related individuals in order to create hybrids and decreases the heterozygous gene. ● One example would include a brother and cousin mating. The result would be a genetic mutation, lower birth rate, smaller in adult size, slower growing rate, or higher infant mortality in the offspring.

Advantages ● There are no advantages to inbreeding besides the fact that you would be getting the same genes from both parents resulting in an offspring which would be considered “pure breed”. Pure breed: Mix breed:

Disadvantages ● Higher risk for heart problems, slower growth rate and physical deformities. ● Poor immune system and fitness.

Hybridization ● The act of mixing two different species or a multiple amount of animals to make a hybrid. ● Single crossed hybrids between two species. ● Population crossed hybrids between a different population of animals or plants. ● Example: Mule is the mix of a female horse and a male donkey, cross between a field snake and a corn snake, and zubron mix of a european bison and a domestic cow.

Advantages ● May produce offspring that have the best characteristics from both parents. ● Traits may enable the species to with stand drastic changes with the environmental condition.

Disadvantages ● There is no specific label or identification of the hybrid animal ● The offspring could end up being weaker and have a genetic defect.
