IT IS STUDY TIME IT IS STUDY TIME GRADE 12’S!!!!!!!!!!

FOCUS ON:  TEXT MAPPING  LEARNING STYLES  MEMORISATION STRATEGIES  EXAM TAKING SKILLS

LEARNING OUTCOMES AFTER THE LESSON LEARNERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO: DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN VARIOUS TEXT MAPPING TECHNIQUES THE PURPOSE OF TEXT MAPPING UNDERSTAND THE USE OF TEXT MAPPING SHOW FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLWDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES INVESTIGATE YOUR OWN LEARNING PREFERENCES AND APPLY IT TO YOUR OWN LEARNING DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN MEMORISATION STRATEGIES UNDERSTAND PHASES OF MEMORISATION

“IMAGINATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN KNOWLEDGE”. -ALBERT EINSTEN- Text mapping is a term generally used to a way of interacting with a text and analyzing the text structure. ADVANTAGES OF TEXT MAPPING  It helps you to remember what you have studied  Promote critical thinking and ability  Increase understanding  Help you to understand your own particular strength as a learner  Make revision easy TEXT MAPPING

EXAMPLES OF TEXT MAPPING METHODS  Tree diagrams  Flow chats  Tables  Mind maps The aim of the tree diagrams  Explain relationships in a particular order  Highlight the static structure based on classification  Give a schematic presentation that is easier to retrieve

TEXT MAPPING FLOW CHARTS A flow chart is a dynamic structure showing a process or sequence moving through time there are two forms of flow charts Linear flow charts Uses straight lines. Shows a process that starts at one point to another. Circular flow charts Uses curved lines, linked to a circle to show an ongoing process the actions in the circle do not reach a final conclusion instead begin the process all over again.

LEARNING STYLES “I HEAR AND I FORGET. I SEE AND I REMEMBER. I DO AND I UNDERSTAND.” -CONFUCIUS- LEARNING STYLE IS THE WAY THAT INDIVIDUALS PERCEIVE AND PROCESS INFORMATION. TYPES OF LEARNERS!!! A.Visual learners- this type of learners learn more by seeing they prefer sitting in front of the class. B.Auditory learners- this type of learners learns best through listening and discussions. C.Kinaesthetic/tactile learners- this type learns best through games, touching and working in groups

MEMORISATION STRATEGIES “EVERY MAN’S WORK, WHETHER IT BE LITERATURE, OR MUSIC, OR PICTURES, OR ARCHITECTURE, OR ANYTHING ELSE, IS ALWAYS A PORTRAIT OF HIMSELF.” -CHRISTIAN ART- WHAT IS MEMORY? “Memory is the ability of the brain to store, retrain, subsequently recall information”(Wikipedia encyclopaedia, 2005) THE PHASES OF MEMORISATION. ☺Record- be in class, listen actively, make sure you understand summarise information. ☺Retain- store information correctly and condense learning content by organising and structuring it. ☺Recall- memorise your “mental hooks” well and give content in your own words.

MEMORISATION STRATEGIES Short term memory- memory that is stored for a short while the information is quickly forgotten. Long term memory- memory that is stored for a very long time it is permanent long term memory has an unlimited capacity it is not easily disrupted or disturbed HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY 1.Use your strongest learning style: visual, auditory and tactile learners 2.Analyse the material: when something is being analysed it is taken apart and looked at carefully 3.Evaluate the learning: it is important to look at the information critically 4.Explain to someone else: people tend to remember what they have explain to some else.

MEMORISATION STRATEGIES ♦ORGANISTION- EXAMPLE ;56879954362 2345 566 7899 ♦CHUNKING- breaking up into smaller parts ♦PEG WORD METHOD- a technique where visual and auditory associations are made. Key words associated with a specific picture ♦LOCI METHOD- a sequence of locations associate with your key words ♦ ACRONYMS- a word created from the first letters of a list of key words ♦RHYMES AND SONGS- example spelling difficulty Mrs D -Mrs I- Mrs FFI- Mrs C- Mrs U- Mrs LTY,

EXAM TAKING SKILLS “WHY STUDY FOR EXAMS…..ARE THEY NOT ABOUT WHT YOU KNOW, NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN CRAM INTO YOUR HEAD THE NIGHT BEFORE?” -UNKNOWN- ( SOURCE: www.twu.edu)

EXAM TAKING SKILLS According to (Van Schoor; Mill & Van der Merwe, 1995:105), the purpose of exams is to asses knowledge and skills. When preparing for exams you need to know the type of exam you will be sitting for. TYPES OF EXAMINATION ORAL EXAM- require you to communicate verbally, demonstrate knowledge of the subject content. PRACTICAL EXAM- you expected to show/demonstrate your practical skills and techniques. WRITTEN EXAM- you expected to write answering questions based on the content you learnt during class time.

EXAM TAKING SKILLS PREAPARING FOR EXAMS  Go over what you learnt using your textbook plus your own notes  Join study groups  Ask teacher about what you do not know  Get a enough of rest  Drink fluids  Make a study time table and stick to it.

EXAM TAKING SKILLS DON’T’S FOR EXAM!!! ×DO NOT STUDY THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM ×DO NOT PROCASTINATE ×DO NOT STUDY WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC ×DO NOT DRINK BIO PLUS OR COFFE TOO MUCH ×DO NOT CROSS NIGHT ×DO NOT PANIC ×DO NOT CRAM

EXAM TAKING SKILLS DO’S FOR EXAMS IF YOU START WRITING AT NINE ARRIVE THIRTY MINTUES EARLY SKIP A QUESTION IF YOU DO NOT REMEMBER THAN RETURN TO IT LATER HAVE A SPARE PEN, PENCIL AND CALCULATOR RELAX READ QUESTION CAREFULLY BEFIRE ANSWRING READ YOUR INSTRUCTIONS OBEY EXAM RULES
