G042 – Lecture 06 Situations Outside Own Exp.. (MB2) Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk

Example Band 1 Situation “When looking for a mobile phone on the internet I can read reviews from other customers who already own the phones and find out which one suits my needs the best. People I know may not have a wide range of phones so getting review without the internet maybe difficult. Online, there are also detailed descriptions of the features of each phone and some sites even have comparison charts and even videos to help me decide which is the best one. The reviews online are better than going to a shop as sales people can be biased and could try to sell me phones they want rid of rather than one I want. Once I have found a phone online, price comparison websites can then be used to help me save money and get the best deal, as they take prices from a range of stores and present the information in a form which is easy to compare deals. If I did not have access to this electronic information I would have to go around lots of shops – also not all of the shops online are in my local area. By using a price comparison website I have access to far more information than is available to me in my towns shopping area. I have also seen videos showing me how the phone works so I wouldn’t have to read the instruction manual - videos are also easier to learn from in my opinion and often show short cuts which users find out and extra hints and tips that are not in the manual”. INFORMATION – WHY – IMPACTS – HOW ELSE COULD DO

Situations Brainstormed 2010 Finding a school for son / daughter - outside own exp?? Finding a new council house People with disabilities People who live in middle of nowhere Early warning systems Earthquake detection systems Ferry navigation systems Introduction of wireless access in Africa Political restrictions in china and Tunisia

Group Work In groups research an unknown area where electronic information is used – present to the rest of the group answers to these questions: What is the situation where electronic information is used? How it works diagrams etc should be included in your essay but for this work only a brief overview as only got a few minutes. What electronic information is generated / used / available? What is the electronic information used for? Who does it benefit / what are the impacts of having / using the information electronically? What would happen if the information was not available electronically – how else could it be done?

Situations Brainstormed 2015 ANPR – character recognition on images – crime Weather - sensors detect natural disasters – saves lives On banking - accounts on the move - environmental saving – security risks Driverless cars - use GPS and sensors to navigate through an environment – future tech Vehicle too vehicle communication (V2V) – cars share data through IF so they potentially don’t crash CAD / CAM – simulation – saves money dry runs, inspection checks AI – robots which learn and can potentially think for themselves- taking over the world!!!

Task G Section #2 Explain in detail at least 4 situations, outside your own experience where electronic information is used, You descriptions should cover – What is the situation where electronic information is used? What electronic information is generated / used / available? What is the electronic information used for? Who does it benefit / what are the impacts of having / using the information electronically? What would happen if the information was not available electronically – how else could it be done? Include diagrams if required to illustrate how the technology works, and how information is sensed, used and outputted.

Biometics – passport control Displair – water vapour 3D display – rotate DARPA – military helmet, monitors body and situates nervous system KERUVE – watch for Alzheimer's track if get lost and safe zone – signal if out of zone Situations Brainstormed 2014

Situations Brainstormed 2013 Luggage tracking devices – (GPS) GPS enabled shoes – (Alzheimer's if get lost / track your family) SMART TV uses biometrics to recognise you and suggest favourites Robot limbs controlled by brain signals Contactless / mobile payment - outside own exp?? Hawk Eye Goal line technology Word lens – coverts photos of language into English Red line indicator early warning system Red planet project – MARS Exploration

Situations Brainstormed 2011 Satellite navigation - outside own exp?? Hospital scans – (MRI, CAT, Ultrasound, XRay) ANPR system Various other police data - usage to solve crimes, CCTV systems including infra red, Fire alarm systems in large buildings / sites, Portability of NHS Patient records – outside own exp??

Plenary Group Task Changes places in the room… Read someone else's work and place some comments on it. ADDDEVELOPCHANGECHALLENGE

Remember: For Each MB1 / MB2 Situation Describe the situation What information is being used Who is it being used by How are they obtaining the information Impacts Positives of accessing the information electronically Negatives of accessing the information electronically How has it changed our lives – for the better OR for the worse? How did we used to access this type of information before it was available electronically? Would we still cope with accessing it this way?
