2 MIM 482 E 2005-2006 SPRING TERM movies about cities Cities and cinema are in very close relation. Cinema exists if cities exist since cinema born in cities and continue their life in cities. The 80 % of cinema products based on the stories in which urban life and urban environment described. Others are based on the subjects of country life and environment.

Cinema was born in the suburbs of Lyon and progressed in the Boulevards of Paris -The movies of 1910’s realized in the streets of Paris and used 17th region of Paris, large urban spaces, bistros and rooftops of Paris. -The urban theme in movies of 1920’s became an independent type of movie and replaced to naïve cinema products -Passing documentary film to avangard type realized in 1920’s. Generally this event dedicated to director Rene Clair’ s works. movies about cities

7 MIM 482 E 2005-2006 SPRING TERM -Avangard movies like Clocks (1926), Walter Ruttman’ s Berlin: Symphony of a City (1927), Dziga Vertov’ s Man with a Camera (obtaining scenes form Moscow and Odessa together), Jean Vigo’s About Nice (1926) showed to urban approaches in that period. -American gung movies had also urban theme and subjects related with Chicago and Broadway sights in 1930’s. -In the same period the French movies like Rene Clair’s Under the Roofs of Paris celebrated the victory of socialist cinema and poetic realizm in cinema. movies about cities

8 MIM 482 E 2005-2006 SPRING TERM -It is generalized that 1940’ s and 50’ s movies showed the tendecy on realizing more studio work and less outdoor shooting. -New wave approach in cinema about 1950’ s real urban scenes came out again. Like Jean PeirreMelvile’s Two Men in Manhattan (1959). -Godard’ s Alphaville (1965) shows real environment of Paris. Its subject shows us the contradiction between center (Alphaville) and the pheripheries. movies about cities

Like Eifel Tower for Paris, Clock Tower in Konak for Izmir, Old Galata Bridge for Istanbul -Urban background to give information about social, economic, cultural and behavioral characteristic of place, space and people in action. movies about cities
