Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net National Capacity Building of ODL Professionals on OER Quality -------------------------------------------------------------------------- open educational resources C E M C AB R A O U workshop organised by the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia in collaboration with Dr B R Ambedkar Open University

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Creating Open Educational Resources : the concept of Trust -------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ Paul Kawachi FRSA kawachi @ open - ed. net http : // www. open - ed. net / oer-quality / trust. ppt trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Trust is a key criterion for quality in OER affecting all stakeholders the issue is for Authors to understand What is Trust, and How to create and maintain adequate levels of Trust through intelligently designed artifacts trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Academic reputation can be conveyed by the name and logo of Elite University on a podcast cover or title screen of a video provided that these are recognised then Trust can be created in the OER user This kind of Trust is in the Cognitive Domain trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net other kinds of Trust include the social presence and community support in the Affective Domain trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net other kinds of Trust include : the social presence and community support in the Affective Domain self-confidence in online learning capability in the Metacognitive Domain trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net other kinds of Trust include : good connectivity, and a place to study in the Environment Domain trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net other kinds of Trust include : good connectivity, and a place to study in the Environment Domain and effective metadata tags and online-search skills in the Management Domain trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net some kinds of Trust such as - prior online e-learning experience span two or more Domains trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Trust is essentially predicated upon prior personal experience if the subject material or lecturer is perceived as inaccurate then Trust can be lost trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Why is Trust important ? trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Trust is important because the student must believe in there being a reasonable chance to achieve his or her own personal goal eg believe in ones own capabilities, or the advocacy of target potential employers trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net 'strategy' defined as : a smallest unit of activity within a sequence to achieve an aim or objective initiated by the student comparing current situation with a personal ideal, and given and opportunity and realistic expectation for success trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net initiate the intrinsic motivation to learn is initiated through self-comparing own current status against a target ideal state through a Negative-Feedback Loop reported elsewhere in detail Kawachi, P. (2006). The will to learn : Tutor’s role. In P.R. Ramanujam (Ed.), Globalisation, education and open distance learning, (pp. 197-221). New Delhi, India : Shipra. http://www.open-ed.net/library/R3107.html

Negative-Feedback Loop for initiating Motivation comparing one’s current state with a target state can create awareness, and given the opportunity and believing in a reasonable chance of success then emotion occurs and the intrinsic motivation to improve

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Negative-Feedback Loop for initiating Motivation initiate Target Culture Ideal State construct Current State construct initiates Motivation Impact on Context Self - Awareness

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net The diagram shows how the outcome from a lower activity through a negative-feedback loop creates a new perception of a higher activity, which when compared with the actual situation the difference ∆ then (given an opportunity, and holding a reasonable expectation of success) motivates the student to engage a lower activity. The rate of achieving a goal is an affect, and the outcome of the comparison is an emotion. trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Trust is important because the student must believe in there being a reasonable chance to achieve his or her own personal goal eg believe in ones own capabilities, or the advocacy of target potential employers trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Gamification : trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Gamification : to build in some design element(s) used in online games eg ( i ) request log-in, and personalise the OER with “Hello Paul …” ( ii ) give loyalty points, prizes, badges, certificates trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Gamification : to gamify your OER you are building in individualised learning developing familiarity, comfort-zone, novelty, and some extrinsic motivations that may improve learning … or may not trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Gamification : eg points could be a distraction the concept is to reduce stress and anxiety and keep the student on task your game element may serve as a cue for student long-term memory and thereby improve the deep quality of learning trust

Open Education Network http :// www. open - ed. net Gamification : related to Trust any technical glitch may destroy Trust and decrease student interest in learning eg ( i ) cannot log-in ( ii ) looses game or points ( iii ) other student better (collaboration lost) trust
