Welcome to Year 1 Teacher: Miss Mitchell LSAs: Mrs Adams (am) and Mrs Sherwood (pm Warfield CE Primary School

‘Friends on a learning journey achieving success together’ Our aim in year 1 is to support and encourage your child, so that they are happy and confident coming to school which in turn will enable them to make the most of the learning opportunities they have and progress well through the year. We also hope that, in using their individual strengths and by trying their best I hope that the children will help each other to learn as friends on their learning journey together. Please do not measure your child’s achievement by what level they are currently at or group they are in but by how much they have improved over a period of time. Children will make progress at different rates. School will keep you up to date on progress through termly parents evenings and annual reports.

‘Friends on a learning journey achieving success together’ Assessment in Year 1 is slightly different to Reception. Your child’s progress will be measured in school by whether they have achieved the ‘Milestone’ objectives specific to their year group. Further information will be shared regarding the reporting process later this term. Children will be set learning challenges in school which are designed to aid children’s learning progress and they are always encouraged to take some responsibility for their own learning and challenge themselves to move on and make progress.

Our Home learning Expectations Maths Maths activities will be sent home weekly for children to complete. This is always include a mental maths aspect which will be assessed in school each Friday. Phonics/Spellings Phonics activities or spellings will be sent home weekly on a Monday and assessed on the following week. Home Learning Grids Home learning grids will be sent out each half term. Children can bring in their work which will be shown to the rest of the class. It is expected that each child will collect 10 points throughout the half term. I will be giving certificates to children when they achieve these 10 points. The maths and phonics/spelling activities are compulsory.

Reading At Warfield CE Primary School we feel that regular and appropriately challenging reading of a range of texts is essential to ensuring the development of all of our children. We ask that parents listen to their child read on a daily basis and record this in their child’s Reading Journal. In Year 1 your child’s reading will be listened to regularly in school. This will happen through lesson and guided reading times. Your child may not be heard individually on a weekly basis by their class teacher but will be heard regularly by other adults in school who will record the reading session in their Reading Journal.
