3.  The term “Bleeding Kansas” was used by newspapers to describe the violence (200 dead, $2 million in property damage  1 st battleground between those for slavery and those who opposed it  Border ruffians: armed Missourians who voted illegally in Kansas to help elect a pro-slavery legislature

5. Fervent abolitionist who led the raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He hoped by arming slaves, he could lead an insurrection against slaveholders.
