Etiquette and Procedures Please follow these rules and suggestions to make this year go as smoothly as possible.

Please look at the syllabus. You should have the signature page signed and bring it back Monday. The syllabus should stay in the front of your binder.

Please look at the brochure. Your binder check will always include this document, so make sure you keep it at all times. The brochure is up on the website, print a new one if you cannot find this one.

Your personal goals and behavior: Always keep in mind that my job is to prepare you to GRADUATE from COLLEGE. Also, keep in mind that you are one of 30 students in the room. If you have a question or issue that only applies to you, wait until an appropriate time (often before or after school is best).

(con’t) I promise I am a lot nicer if you ask me something when I am not stressed (if you ask while I’m greeting people or in the middle of a lesson, I may not be as nice). Sometimes you will not like the choices you will have to make or the consequences, but you do need to try your best to make the right choices and accept any consequences that come along with the wrong ones.

(con’t) Do not lie or cheat. I want to be able to write you a college recommendation and I want to be able to trust you. Do not write on desks or destroy anything in the room. Do not get up and walk around the room during a lesson or group work time.

(con’t) Please do not cause distractions by being late, asking to run errands, or interrupting another of my classes. Do not use all the kleenex. Do not lean against the back wall. Do not write on the board.

IDs: You must wear your ID at all times.

Using Passes: You may use one pass a quarter (following KA school rules). Use them wisely. Do not come to class and ask to go to the bathroom/locker- be prepared before class.

(con’t) If you are late without an administrative pass or a teacher actually accompanying you, go to 111 or hall sweeps: no exceptions. If you are late with an administrative pass, stand in the window and knock once- I will get to you as soon as I can or wave you in. I do not take passes from teachers/counselors- tell them you have a class to get to or you will have to hall sweeps.

(con’t) Never ask for a pass from someone when you have not been with that person. I also do not give passes, so do not stay to ask a question if you will not make it to class/out of the building.

Following the Dress Code: You must follow the Kenwood dress code or go to the Dean. This is because I am rated based on my ability/willingness to follow school rules. I am able and willing to follow these rules. You may not wear a coat in class. Work out a system so that your coat is put away and you are on time for this class.

Don’t Be on Time, Be Early: You can spend a minute looking on the table by the door for handouts (you will loose points if you do not pick up the materials for the day when you come in). You can also staple/paper clip any items you need to turn in (you cannot do this once I ask to collect them). You must be seated by the time the bell rings.

Absence Policies: More than 7 is excessive. Use the calendar to find out what you missed (it is online and passed out on Mondays or at the start of the unit). Get handouts from the bin before class, after class, or at the end of the day. Ask your homework partner what you missed.

(con’t) Come see me after school if you have further questions (never ask “did we do anything when I was out?” or say “I didn’t get that – I was absent.”). (We will not take up class time because you were absent) Put your absence note on the podium as you enter- not in the middle of class. Notes must have your name, parent/guardian’s signature, phone # and division teacher/ class signatures. You must get an early dismissal if you leave school or it is a cut no matter what.

In-class Expectations Transitioning from one activity to another will be very quick About a minute will be allowed for moving to a group I will count down from five and expect everyone to be in their group when I get to one. Getting out paper or assignments should take about 20 seconds.

Con’t When you enter the room, you will: –pick up handouts –put your heading on them –begin the bellringer

Con’t Groups will be assigned and MUST WORK TOGETHER. No social loafing! To be ready, a group must have all members’ desks touching and all materials organized.

Office Hours: I am available all lunch periods (Tuesdays and Thursdays only at the end of 6 th ) and from 3-3:15. Come to 307 and wait quietly. It takes a minute for me to get upstairs. Ask friends to wait in the hall as it does get crowded in there. Have SPECIFIC questions ready and bring your binder, book, pen, etc.

Special Circumstances: If you have no lunch period and leave school for a program, you have several options- but you are responsible for picking one. –Make an appointment to meet me at 7:45. –Email me specific questions (I check email often from 8-3). –Give me a note with questions during class and if I have time, I’ll respond.

Homework procedures: If you do not have your homework, do not ask if it can be turned in late or if you can get it from your locker. If you do not have it, as always, you may turn it in for -1 letter grade. You have 1 week or until the unit is over. Essays loose points each day they are late.

EXAMS and QUIZZES: we have about ten a year. You will generally make them up on make-up day at the END OF THE SEMESTER (your gradebook online will say 0 until you make it up- so do everything in your power to be here on exam days) You can ask to take one early if you know you will be out (see me at least two days ahead of time so I can copy it).

Con’t. Quizzes worth <10 points may OR may not be available to be made up depending on if we go over them in class the next day. Missed work due to absences that are not excused within 2 weeks are not eligible for make-ups I cannot think of a reason that I would put people in the hall to do make-ups and I rarely schedule them (like for funerals only) other than for make-up day.

(con’t) Take responsibility for turning in your own work on time. Because I need to stay organized, you may only turn in work during class when it is collected- not after I have collected papers, not in the hall, not after class by running back to the room, not in my mailbox, not over e-mail, not on either of my desks, not through someone else, not through one of my colleagues.

This is how to contact me: Office hours: 11:15am-3:15pm most days Contact information: ACT/AVID OFFICE Room 307 (773)535-1350 ext. 27451 (I do not check this as often as e- mail) E-mail: kkkeyes@cps.edu (this is the best way to reach me- I check it regularly)kkkeyes@cps.edu

This is the website for this class: you can see assignments and related web links at: http://www.kenwoodacademy.orghttp://www.kenwoodacademy.org Please use the IMPACT GRADEBOOK system to check progress on a regular basis. Assignments that are incorrect on GRADEBOOK will only be corrected within two weeks of being entered. Please see me right away if something is wrong.

I cannot wait! This is going to be a great year with 0 failures and 100% success! No matter how you’ve done this week, you can still earn an A or B at the semester- never give up!
