World History September 19 and 22

1.Which parts of the dynastic cycle are directly related to political power? 2.Which parts of the dynastic cycle are directly related to economics? 3.Which parts of the dynastic cycle are directly related to religion? 4.Which parts of the dynastic cycle are directly related to area or geography? 5.How might the dynastic cycle change in light of intellectual growth in the community?

Interplays between politics, religion, and economics and geography Issues of man seeking control or predictability over the environment Tendency of people to see patterns where none exist Natural cognitive tendency Helps in development of schemas that help people understand the world Leads people to false conclusions all the time

There is a pairs assignment at the end of this slideshow It is fun, I promise Hang in there. You will need to do a few more slide questions before moving on to that assignment As you move through the slide questions, keep a compare and contrast chart about the Indus River civilizations and China. You will need those notes to help provide historical background for your first DBQ assignment on September 23 or 24 The DBQ will count as a quiz score, so be ready

Vocabulary? Purpose? Information? Patterns? Explain the Patterns? So What?

Importance of rivers to early civilizations Agricultural use Farming Replenishment of soils Drinking water for animals Basic human needs Drinking water Fish Sanitation Transportation and trade Energy (eventually, once people learn to harness it) Close to the coast rather than the source of the river also seems to be important and will become more so as civilizations begin to interact more with each other

1.What is especially stunning about this picture? 2.What does this picture tell you about the level of organization of civilizations in the Indus Valley? 3.What might the picture tell you about economic distribution of resources in the Indus Valley? 4.What might it tell you about social structure and equality in the Indus alley?

Egalitarian nature of Indus river communities Some archaeologists have taken this to mean that there were democratic type governments in the Indus Valley before the democracies of ancient Greece or the republics of Rome Note that there are no excessively large structures that might seem to belong to a leader or ruler of any kind Cityscapes in the Indus are very unique from those in China, Mesopotamia, or Egypt There is a lack of monumental architecture (temples, centers of worship, centers of government, etc) in the Indus Valley This is a highly compact city built for defense (notice the wall)

In pairs and using your EXTENSIVE knowledge of early civilizations Use a blank sheet of white copy paper (if it is not sitting out, there is half a box in the front closet.) Design a model early civilization in the location of modern day Wilmington Draw a map of the location of your civilization Draw a representation of your city, including a basic sense of which types of people live in which areas, the types of housing available, location of government structures, and any monumental architecture On the back, describe the politics, economics, religion, social structure, Intellectual development, and geography of your city

Exit ticket Identify three things that early civilizations had in common. Identify two features of Indus civilization that made it unique. Why do you think these large scale civilizations did NOT develop in North America? (Just give a hypothesis) Homework- watch these videos and pay close attention to the differences and similarities in ancient Asian civilizations Indus valley civilizations Ancient China
