Egalitarian nature of Indus river communities Some archaeologists have taken this to mean that there were democratic type governments in the Indus Valley before the democracies of ancient Greece or the republics of Rome Note that there are no excessively large structures that might seem to belong to a leader or ruler of any kind Cityscapes in the Indus are very unique from those in China, Mesopotamia, or Egypt There is a lack of monumental architecture (temples, centers of worship, centers of government, etc) in the Indus Valley This is a highly compact city built for defense (notice the wall)
