Warm-Up!  Pick up an article on your way in!  Read and annotate the article  Answer the 6 questions at the end of the article when you are finished  You have just 15 minutes to be fully completed starting when the bell rings

Objective: SWBAT explain why biodiversity is important in the biosphere.

What is the biosphere? TThe biosphere is all life on Earth

What is biodiversity?  Bio means: life  Diversity means: variety  Put the two together, and you get: Variety of Life or Biodiversity

Interdependence  Interdependence: Every species is linked, directly or indirectly, with others in an ecosystem.

 Plants provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for other organisms.  Many plants depend upon animals for help in reproduction (bees pollinate flowers, provide nutrients (such as minerals in animal waste products).

 All animals are part of food webs that include plants and animals of other species

 Food Chain: sequence of what eats what in an ecosystem to obtain nutrition  Trophic Levels: The trophic level of an organism is the position it holds in a food chain.

 Producers – an organism that makes its own food (plants)  Consumers – an organism that gets energy by eating other organisms  Herbivores – plant eaters  Carnivores – meat eaters  Omnivores – plant and meat eaters

 Tropic Level 1 - Producer  Tropic Level 2 - Primary Consumer  Tropic Level 3 - Secondary Consumer  Tropic Level 4 - Tertiary (Third) Consumer

.. Make 1 different food chain using the desert food web with your partner (4 level minimum)

Make 1 different food chain using the Deciduous Forest food web with your partner(4 level minimum)

Exit Ticket 1. What is a trophic level? 2. Would humans be at the highest tropic level or lowest tropic level? 3. What is the difference between producers and consumers? 4. Why is biodiversity important?
