1 Intro To Chemistry Branches of Chemisty

2 Intro To Chemistry: At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to:
List the 6 branches of chemistry and be able to give an example of each List the 3 types of research in chemistry

3 Branches of Chemistry Many major areas of study for specialization
Several career opportunities Also used in many other jobs

4 Euphemisms in Science We all know that some politicians and government spokesmen use certain euphemistic phrases to give an aura of respectability to descriptions of events or actions which would be offensive when expressed in plain English. The following is a list of Euphemisms in Science and their translations into plain English. “Accidentally stained during mounting...” Accidentally dropped on the floor!

5 #1 Branch of Chemistry Organic Chemistry – It is the scientific study of chemical compounds of carbon and hydrogen.

6 1. Organic Chemistry Organic chemists study the structure, function, synthesis, and identity of carbon compounds Useful in petroleum industry, pharmaceuticals, polymers

7 #2 Branch of Chemistry Inorganic Chemistry – deals with molecules which do not contain carbon.

8 2. Inorganic Chemistry Inorganic chemists study the structure, function, synthesis, and identity of non-carbon compounds Polymers, Metallurgy

9 #3 Branch of Chemistry Physical Chemistry –
Study of the physical properties of chemical substances . Typically studies changes in temperature, pressure, volume, heat, and work of systems in the solid, liquid, and or gas phase.

10 HONK if you passed p-chem
3. Physical Chemistry HONK if you passed p-chem Physical chemistry is the physics of chemistry… the forces of matter Much of p-chem is computational Develop theoretical ideas for new compounds

11 #4 Branch of Chemistry Analytical Chemistry – the identification and analysis of material samples to gain an understanding of their chemical composition, structure and function.

12 4. Analytical Chemistry Analytical chemistry is the study of high precision measurement Find composition and identity of chemicals Forensics, quality control, medical tests

13 IR (Infrared) Spectroscopy

14 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) Spectroscopy Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) Spectroscopy

15 #5 Branch of Chemistry Biochemistry –
The study of the chemical substances and vital processes occurring in living organisms Areas of biochemistry include cell metabolism, the endocrine system, the genetic code (DNA, RNA), protein synthesis, cell membrane transport, and signal transduction.

16 5. Biochemistry Cross between biology and chemistry
Pharmaceuticals and genetics

17 Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)
Yeast with GFP Yeast

18 #6 Branch of Chemistry Theoretical Chemistry – the prediction of the properties of new compounds without using traditional laboratory equipment.

19 For Example: Ununseptium Atomic Number: 117
Atomic Weight: Approximately 294 amu Melting Point: Higher than Astatine Boiling Point: Higher than Astatine Density: Higher than Astatine Phase at Room Temperature: Expected to be a Solid Element Classification: Non-metal Should be Radioactive, Not Yet Produced Period Number: 7 Group Number: 17 Group Name: Halogen What's in a name? Will hold a temporary name that means one-one-seven.

20 3 Types of Research Basic/pure – gain new knowledge; simple curiosity.
Applied – to meet the goals defined by a specific problem. Technological – to improve human life.
