Do Now 9/12/14 1.Pull out binder p. 8 = M1 U1 L6 “The Vietnam Wars” 2.Silently read sections 2, 3, & 4 for gist. [Try to read for what each section is mainly about] (10 min) 3.I’m coming around for a HW check.

Learning Targets 1.Determine the central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas. 2.By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

Agenda 9/12/14 1.Do Now 2.Learning Targets & Agenda 3.“The Vietnam Wars” Section 1 Review 4.Sec. 2, 3, or 4 Jigsaw Protocol 5.HW: 1.Finish your assigned Section (2, 3, or 4) questions; 2.Read or reread pp. 22-41 in Inside Out & Back Again

Section 1 – Question check (please edit, revise, or add to your work) 1.even implies that the author was emphasizing the amount of countries that had invaded or occupied Vietnam, and it emphasizes how long ago these occupation go back. 2.“forged in the crucible” – a blacksmith forges (creates) metal items by molding them in a crucible (container); so…Vietnam is a nation that was created and molded by war and battle.

Section 1 – Question check (please edit, revise, or add to your work) 3. pacified has a the same root word as a “pacifier” that a parent gives to a baby – this stops a baby from crying or screaming. In this way, the Chinese are like the “parents” and the Vietnamese are like that baby who is being calmed down enough to stop revolting (but they revolted anyway).

Section 1 – Question check (please edit, revise, or add to your work) 4.String = a line of heroes, one after another; these heroes are women, they refuse to surrender, and the author speaks about them positively – using words like hero, gold-plated armor, and momentous results. 5.Le Loi’s poet/advisor was saying that it is better to have the love and respect of the people than to conquer land.

Section 1 – Question check (please edit, revise, or add to your work) 6. The author’s perspective is one with a positive attitude towards the Vietnamese people; the author believes they deserve their independence. Words like heroes, gracious, and victory help me recognize that the author is in defense of an independent Vietnam.
