Abstract In this paper we are going to present a new effective jet nebulizer design. Developed system has two major intelligent controls; control of compressor power and treatment time period control function. With this study we tried to improve design of commercially available jet nebulizers. The test results also have proven that we have achieved our goal.

Introduction Over the past few decades, aerosol drug delivery has become one of the major treatments for patients with pulmonary diseases [1]. The effectiveness of aerosol drug delivery during mechanical ventilation is influenced by the patient, ventilator, and nebulizer variables [1]. Design differences among pneumatically powered, small-volume nebulizers affect drug disposition and thus affect drug availability and efficacy [2].

Jet nebulizer A. Basic It is commonly used to treat asthma patients and lung disease in cystic fibrosis cases. Jet nebulizers allow the medicine to reach the lungs directly, where they can be more effective. Jet nebulizers function by converting solutions or suspensions into aerosols with a mist particle size small enough to reach the lungs via inhalation. In addition to jet nebulizers, there are mesh nebulizers and ultrasonic nebulizers.

Jet nebulizer B. Aerosol production The medicine is placed in the nebulizer's medicine cup. When the jet nebulizer is used, the medicine forms a thin film of liquid. A compressor forces air through the thin film of liquid medicine, turning it into a mist. The mist is forced by the air pressure generated by the compressor into the mouthpiece, where the patient breathes it in. Some compressors use AC electrical outlets and some are battery powered, which allows them to be portable but may produce lower air pressure. Figure 1 shows common jet nebulizer system.

Fuzzy logic Fuzzy logic was born in 1965 by the pioneer work of Zadeh [7]. The first application of fuzzy logic to the medical field dates back to 1969, when Zadeh published a paper on the possibility to apply fuzzy sets in biology. Fuzzy logic is used mainly in control engineering. It is based on fuzzy logic reasoning which employs linguistic rules in the form of if-then statements. Fuzzy logic and fuzzy control feature a relative simplification of a control methodology description.

System test result We made measurements before to start design to obtain membership functions base limits and after to evaluate the system response. Strile water is used in all measurements. The pressure- flow characteristics were determined using a rotameter (Roxpur/Platon) and a pressure transducer (Honeywell ASDX series ultra-low pressure sensor). Figure 6 shows pressure sensor.

Discussion Correct use of jet nebulizers depends partly on their design and operation and partly on their design and operation and partly on their use by patient. Latest studies highlighted that the jet nebulizer was placed proximal to the ventilator and prior to the heated humidifier, using 15 cm of large-bore tubing to connect the nebulizer T-piece to the humidifier inlet [1,19]. We test the system by using this position. According to test results, developed fuzzy model is expected to be very useful in making appropriate control system for nebulizer compressor. Higher bias flow decreases aerosol drug delivery [1].
