2 Chapter 2 – Read I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) Self-Discipline: Running for Eternal Rewards (The Maxwell Leadership Bible) Paul, the leader, challenges his readers to run the Christian life with focus (v.24) train (v. 25) – This refers to months of severe training before a contest of wrestling or fighting with an opponent.  See contrast between corruptible and incorruptible crown

3 Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) compete with passion and fight with purpose (v. 26) - Paul claims to be running the race to win, and fighting the fight for the knockout blow.  Fight with absolute confidence in victory. master their flesh (v. 27) – Keep the body under and bring it into subjection.  To strike one under the eye; to beat black and blue.

4 Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) This is Paul’s explanation of how he was boxing.  Figuratively speaking, he was not boxing, but beating his body black and blue to bring it into slavery lest he should become a castaway (Christless and literally rejected).  He considered his body an enemy with which he must contend in moral combat to keep it under control by self-denial, abstinence, and severe mortification.

5 Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) He acted to keep the body a slave to the soul. Not permitting the soul to be the slave of the body. He did this constantly lest after he had preached to others he would become a castaway. Paul asks, If athletes work to get a trophy, why not we who receive eternal rewards?
