1 + Week 2- Assignment By: Karoline Kujawa

2 + My name is Karoline and I was born in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1992. I was adopted when I was one year old and moved to Ohio. I have returned to El Salvador quite often and my younger sister was adopted from there as well. She is the first person I interviewed. This interview was exciting for me because I really wanted to see her results. Anne is mentally handicapped. She has schizophrenia and bi polar disorder so she is incapable of living a normal life. Being from the same country, she really looks up to me and I am her favorite person in the world. She means the world to me and giving her this assignment really showed me she took time to answer these questions. Name: Anne Kujawa Age: 18 Country of orgin: El Salvador Occupation: Student

3 + The second person I interviewed is also from El Salvador, a small village called El Guayabo. He is a very special person. On a normal day in January 2001, there was an earthquake that sent him falling off a wall and into a pit of fire. He was rushed to the hospital and had to have his legs amputated. Ever since my adoption my parents gave 50% of their time helping El Salvador and getting there friends too as well. A couple that was very active became interested in Hector and brought him to the US to get proper medical care. Soon after they adopted him and Hector has been given a second chance at life and he sure has gone above and beyond. He is an excellent golfer, kayaked across the Mississippi River, finished ToughMudder events and has shown extraordinary courage, determination, and love for life through it all. 4 + The third person I interviewed is a good friend of mine. I met him just a year ago and he still lives in my hometown, Fort Myers. Amaury Ceballi and is Dominican. Amaury and I used to work together at a beach store on Fort Myers Beach. He currently is producing music and adds in a Dominican flavor. Name: Amaury Ceballi Age: 25 Country of orgin: Dominican Republic Occupation: Student

5 + 1. What makes U.S. Hispanics different from others in our society? Anne said: “I think that Hispanics in the U.S are different because we speak English well and the ones who are not can barley speak it so there for make it harder to communicate. We are lucky we get to be here.” Hector said: “Being a minority in this country brings out the best in each one of us as Latinos. We have the mentality that we have to maybe try harder in society to be equal. “ Amaury said: “Hispanics in the US are hard working usually. We are seen as a minority but the Hispanic community is only continuing to grow.

6 + 2. What are a few of the values and beliefs of yours?: Anne said: “What are a few of the values and beliefs of yours?: Our foundation is our family. I believe in hard working people, honesty and family bond. I believe we should take care and respect our seniors.” Hector said: “The most important values I would say are respect and honesty. It is important to be considered an equals.” Amaury said: “I believe that family is the backbone. Respect is a big deal. I believe we should have respect for family and the value of life.

7 + 3. Do you notice any habits or behaviors that US Hispanics possess?: Anne said: “we are hard workers we work very hard and get our jobs done. “ Hector said: “I think we are very determined and true to our history and culture. We are very passionate about important political and socioeconomic issues. “ Amaury said: “Most Hispanics seem to very determined and hard working for the money they earn.”

8 + 4. Have you noticed any advertising techniques towards Hispanics? Anne said: “Spanish commercials and using the language.“ Hector said: “When it comes to advertising to our market, I feel a lot of it is done towards a "Mexican" market, using jingles and personalities that are often of Mexican heritage. The will try to sell you everything using "fiesta' themes or soccer or Mexican music in general.“ Amaury said: “By offering Spanish translations everywhere. Having Spanish speaking staff workers.”

9 + 5. Do you think advertising towards Hispanics is better for the economy?: Anne said: “Yes, because there's a lot of us.” Hector said: “Yes. Absolutely. We are a very large market, and it is just common sense to target it and if affective, it would be very beneficial for our economy. “ Amaury said: “Yes definitely. The market is huge and only continuing to get bigger.”

10 + 6. Where do you currently live? Do most people speak Spanish there?: Anne said: “I live in Fort Myers Florida, yes there are many Hispanics around where i live working to earn a living.” Hector said: “I live in Naples, Florida and I would say most people do not speak Spanish.” Amaury said: “Fort Myers, FL. Yes there is quite a lot of Spanish people here… mainly for work. “

11 + 7. How long have you been in the US?: Anne said: I've been in the U.S for 17 Years i was adopted from El Salvador When i was 1 year old. Hector said: “I have been in USA since 2001, so 12 years.” Amaury said: “I have been here since I was 12.”

12 + 8. What are the main differences you see in the US and the country you were born in? Anne said: My country is very poor and have less opportunity's Then the U.S holds so I feel as if the U.S is a better place for many people to live.” Hector said: “Big differences in every aspect of social life. Our political system is 30 years old compared to 230 years for USA so we are a very young and developing country. Being a 3rd world country there are just many differences between El Salvador and USA.” Amaury said: “The US is very organized and the job opportunities is much greater here.”

13 + Conclusion: A. What makes US Hispanics different from others in our society? US Hispanics seem to appreciate the life here in the US. The Hispanic community has only increased and has a big affect on our economy. Advertising to this big community can significantly help our economy boom which is what we need. B. What are values and beliefs that characterize Hispanics? Hispanics are very family oriented. They believe in a strong family bond with honesty and respect. Respect for each other and elders is important. I possess all of the same beliefs as my friends and family I interviewed and I am Hispanic as well.

14 + Conclusion: C. What habits, behaviors, and external manifestations of culture characterize US Hispanics? US Hispanics are very hard working because the life style here is sometimes so much better than one might experience in their home country. Hispanic people tend to have big family celebrations because of how close they are. They have a lot of traditional food they prepare for a big fiesta.

15 + Conclusion: D. What makes advertising better when targeting Hispanics? Advertising to Hispanics is a great thing because the Hispanic community has increased and seems to be increasing as the years go by. By targeting this community, if done correctly, it could significantly help our economy. Seems to be that just simply being friendly and personal with Hispanic people is effective. Targeting and focusing on important things such as family, celebrations, food, and music are all things that could attract this community.
