Plastic A wide range of synthetic materials used in the manufacturing of industrial products

Advantages of Plastic…  Very useful in construction, electronics, packaging, and transportation industries  Comes from natural sources  Strong, lightweight, odorless, and cheap  Can be reused and stored, unlike aluminum  Very useful in construction, electronics, packaging, and transportation industries  Comes from natural sources  Strong, lightweight, odorless, and cheap  Can be reused and stored, unlike aluminum

Disadvantages of Plastic…  Indestructible  Produced from oil, a resource that is running out  Creates pollution when melted  Accumulates in oceans, killing animals and damaging the planet  Clogs roadside drains, which could cause the flooding of the street at heavy rainfalls  Indestructible  Produced from oil, a resource that is running out  Creates pollution when melted  Accumulates in oceans, killing animals and damaging the planet  Clogs roadside drains, which could cause the flooding of the street at heavy rainfalls

How is plastic affecting our oceans?

Every bit of plastic ever made still exists, with very few exceptions; only 3-5% is recycled and a small amount is incinerated. More than a million seabirds, 100,000 marine mammals, and countless fish die in the North Pacific each year, either from mistakenly eating plastic pollution or from being caught in it and drowning. Plastics are not biodegradable; they actually resist biodegradation, but will crumble into smaller particles from exposure to sunlight and the elements. The small plastic particles resemble food to sea animals, and the results are tragic.  Source: www.examiner.comwww.examiner.com Every bit of plastic ever made still exists, with very few exceptions; only 3-5% is recycled and a small amount is incinerated. 8 How does plastic harm the environment?

Next time you are about to throw away plastic materials, think for a minute. Could you reuse what is in your hand? If everyone contributes a bit of help towards this issue, we can make the planet better for our children and generations to come.
