Southern Ocean benthic biodiversity and distribution patterns CAML, DFG and CeDAMar Workshop Wilhelmshaven, March 2010 Stefanie Kaiser and workshop participants

CAML, DFG & CeDAMar workshop DZMB, Wilhelmshaven, March 21st-25th 2010 45 participants from 13 countries 26 oral and 15 poster presentations 1) Macrobenthic data (EBS) 2) Progress in SO benthic biodiversity 3) Grant application 4) SCAR biological program Ecosystem functioning Biodiversity structure Responses to climate change

Workshop programme Working groups 2. SO review ms—David Barnes 3. EBS synthesis ms—Stefanie Kaiser

Key questions Where do we know least? Geographic, bathymetric, taxonomic and other biases … How good are our existing data and understanding? Sample design, scaling issues, interpretation of data … What drives patterns in biodiversity? Pattern assessment, fit of physical data, modelling

Epibenthic sledge (EBS) A high resolution tool to investigate macrofaunal patterns complementary sampling; > 160 deployments multiple spatial scales (1-1000 kms) across major regions (Amundsen, Bellingshausen, Weddell, Scotia & Ross seas) spanning > 6000 m depth ANDEEP I-III, BIOPEARL I-II, BASWAP, EASIZ II-III, IPY-CAML

EBS synthesis manuscript Appropriateness of biodiversity measures (cf. qualitative data) Spatial variability in macrofaunal abundance & diversity Mining value from `heterogeneous` data sets Environmental data: sediment, productivity, organic content Do the supra-/epinet sample different faunas?

EBS synthesis manuscript Data set: Family level data: Isopods, poriferans, gastropods, bivalves, ostracods, bryozoans, polychaetes Generic level: isopods, gastropods, polychaetes, bryozoans ANDEEP I-III, ANDEEP-SYSTCO, BIOPEARL 1 & 2, EASIZ II, Oceans 20/20 Weddell Sea, Scotia Sea, Amundsen Sea, Chatham Rise & Challenger Plateau (S. Pacific) Proposed deadline: 30. November 2010

Problems EBS sorting time consuming & still in progress ID: different levels of taxonomic resolution Data share agreement EBS meta data 1st step taxonomist participation and data location geographic scope sample status existing literature (based on the data set)

1.) Phylogeography/Deep Phylogeny - Florian Leese 2.) Classical biogeography - Katrin Linse 3.) Sampling effort - Stefano Schiaparelli 4.) New techniques in taxonomy - Saskia Brix 5.) Data from imaging/New habitats - David Bowden 6.) Antarctic biodiversity estimates - David Barnes 7.) Ecophysiological vulnerability - Jeroen Ingels Intro/ discussion and coordination – Stefanie Kaiser, Saskia Brix, Simone N. Brandão Deadline 1. October 2010 Progress in SO benthic biodiversity

Conclusions 1)‘Discussive‘ style of workshop 2)Macrofaunal biodiversity synthesis ms underway 3)Review of last decade of biodiversity progress started 4)New grant initiative to improve biodiversity resolution 5)Progress on direction of future SCAR programmes
