2 Birth and Death Birth name: Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel
Born: August 19, 1883, Coco was born in the workhouse in the Loire Valley where her unmarried mother worked though she denied it Died: January 10, 1971 in Paris, France of Tuberculosis ( consumption)

3 Coco’s Family Coco’s mother (Jeanne Dovelle) died when she was young
Her father was Albert Chanel She had two sisters: Antoinette and Julia Chanel She had three brothers: Lucien, Alphonse, and Augustin Chanel

4 Coco’s Family Cont. Augustin dies as a baby
Coco’s mother died of tuberculosis when Coco was twelve When Coco’s mother died, her father abandoned them Coco was the oldest in her family

5 Albert Chanel When Albert abandoned his kids, he left his sons with a peasant family He sent Coco and her sisters to a convents‘ orphanage

10 Coco in WWII Coco was shunned after Paris fell to Germany in WWII
Her shop was closed and she became a nurse for the Nazi army She later went to Switzerland with her Nazi lover

11 Coco’s Comeback She was angered after coming out of her exile when Dior came out with the “New Look”, the corset It took a few years for her to win critics back over, but when she did, her suits became status symbols in their own right, and her career increased as she introduced purses, shoes and jewelry

12 Media A Broadway musical of her life opened in 1969, with Katharine Hepburn taking the role of Chanel 'Chanel Solitaire' in 1971 was the first film made about Coco Followed by the American TV movie 'Coco Chanel' made in 2008 It rewrote her history by overlooking her connections to the Nazis.
