Forging new generations of engineers

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineers

Civil Engineering Disciplines 1. Structural 2. Waste Treatment 3. Transportation 4. Geotechnical 5. Water Management 6. Construction Management

Structural Engineers Design such things as…

…Bridges

…Buildings

…Dams

and Stadiums

Waste Treatment Engineering This discipline is responsible for designing and analyzing water treatment facilities 1. Sanitary Waste treatment –(Domestic waste water) 2. Industrial Waste treatment –(Removal of harmful chemicals) 3. Potable (drinking water) –(Purification of drinking water)

Transportation Engineering Design and analyze: Highway construction Railways Airports Urban/Suburban Road networks Parking Areas Traffic control signals

Geotechnical engineering Analyze subterranean rock and soil in order to determine load bearing capabilities Essential for a safe and secure structure

Water Management Engineering Involves the use of hydraulic and hydrologic principles to design: Drainage systems Detention/retention ponds Navigational waterways Dams Lakes

Construction Management Engineering Construction managers are responsible for: providing quality control reviewing contracts, ordering materials, hiring and scheduling sub- contractors…

Work Areas for Civil Engineers Private Practice: Plans, designs, constructs and operates physical works and facilities used by the public.

Work Areas for Civil Engineers Public Practice: Involved in city and/or regional planning, layout and construction of highways and pipelines.

Work Areas for Civil Engineers In Academia: Teaches students the fundamentals of civil engineering. Also involved in research in order to advance the state- of-the-art.

Work Areas for Civil Engineers In Combination with other Disciplines: A Civil Engineering degree combined with an other degree such as: Engineering Geologist, Engineering Economist, or Engineer/Attorney

CE Salaries Recent BSCE graduates have started at approximately $30,000 to $35,000 a year, Master's degree students can expect to earn initially $36,000 to $40,000. Ph.D.'s usually begin at $45,000 to $50,000 with a large research company or at a University.

Becoming a Registered Professional Engineer Fundamentals Examination (FE or EIT) This exam is offered in April and October every year. Most students take the exam right before graduation or soon after while the information is still fresh in their minds. (Engineer-In-Training) Work Experience -Most jurisdictions require four years of experience working under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Specific exam in your discipline offered in both April and October. After passing the PE and satisfying the requirements of your local board (state), you can use the distinguished P.E. designation
