3 Useful expressions Asking for advice Can you help me decide...? Could you please... ? Can I ask you for some advice? What can you suggest? Would you like to...?

4 Giving advice Maybe you could...? Maybe it would be better to... How /What about...? Why not do sth? Why don’t you do sth?

5 1. suggestion [C] n.: an idea of what you might do in a particular set of conditions. e.g. Can I make a suggestion? My suggestion is that we (should) send a few people to help the other groups.

6 2. advice (U) n.: a suggestion on about what someone should do. e.g. a piece of advice some (much, pieces of) advice They gave some advice (a piece of advice) on our work.

7 Let’s ask for the teacher’s advice on our English study. If you take/follow my advice and study hard, you will pass the examination.

8 3. make a decision: decide e.g. They couldn’t make a decision about where to go on holiday. Am I supposed to make a decision?

9 4. have sb./sth. in mind (for sth.): 心中有适当的人选 ( 或想做的事 ) e.g. Do you have anyone in mind for this job? 你有没有想到什么人可以做这项工作 ?

10 5. Peter wouldn’t like that: Here “would” is used to express opinions politely, not express the past e.g. -- How about going to the cinema this evening?

11 ---That’s fine./That will be fine./That would be fine. Tomorrow morning isn’t/won’t/ wouldn’t be very convenient. This kind of food wouldn’t agree with you.

12 Listen and practice Choose one of the situations on P72 to create your own dialogues. Situation 1 A: Hello, Jack! You look worried. Do you need help?

13 B: Yes, I do. I want to find a good song to dance to. Could you choose one for me? A: Sure. That depends on the kind of your dancing. When will you need it? B: On Saturday evening. We need a slow and soft song to dance to.

14 A: I think you can play the famous song “Edelweiss”( 雪绒花 ). It’s not fast. B: It’s a good song, but we want to play the song at the end of the party. A: Hm. How about “Auld Lang Syne”( 友谊地 久天长 )? It’s also an excellent song to dance to. B: That’s a good idea. Thank you.

18 Homework Read about the situation in Talking P146, then use one of the situations to create a dialogue to practise making suggestions and giving advice.
