Composer Project Time Guidelines for term papers

General Paper Guidelines Must be typed and double spaced – no hand written pages will be accepted Times New Roman or Ariel Font (no others accepted!) Minimum of 5 full pages (not partial) Try to keep it to a 7 page maximum Must have 3 references; ONLY 2 BEING INTERNET WEBSITE REFERENCES!! Find a journal, book, etc Must have citations / reference page at the end! *(This is a policy—All works must be cited!)

Visual Aid / Audio Requirements You must have ONE AUDIO and ONE VISUAL AID for your presentation (your choice ) If it is a YOUTUBE video, please be sure to put the address in your Works Cited page at the end Be sure to include any pictures or audio files in your reference section and/or works cited in your paper!! (ANY PICTURES YOU ADD DOES NOT COUNT AS A WRITTEN PORTION OF YOUR PAPER!)

What to Cover in your papers Childhood things (minimal) Life information (minimal) Schooling / Occupations Who they worked with (if famous) Who they taught or influenced Where they worked or got their “big break” if you can find the info Listen to at LEAST one piece and discuss YOUR OPINIONS Who were they influenced by (well known teachers, etc) At least 3 Musical selections they are known for End of their lives (how did they die, etc) Any other information that seems neat to know for a presentation

Keep in Mind One Audio or One Visual Aid is required (more than one is “extra icing” for your paper) This is NOT a MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY, but a DISCOVERY PRESENTATION based on the LIFE of the composer… Focus on life aspects that may seem important or unique…find things that others may find amusing or unusual!! Should you use a picture and insert this into your paper, this does not count as part of your 5 page minimum

WATCH OUT!! You need to CROSS REFERENCE your materials! Many things you find on internet sites are WRONG or MISLEADING…if you plan to use something in your presentation, make sure you find that information in some form more than one time!!! I have had several instances of wrong information in the past YOUTUBE VIDEOS are only effective if they are “correct”…. Be careful and watch the ENTIRE video, or listen to the entire selection to be sure it is not a hoax! WRITE YOUR OPINIONS, NOT SOMEONE ELSES in your paper BE SURE TO PUT YOUR YOUTUBE ADDRESS IN YOUR WORKS CITED PAGE!!

KICKERS and SUCH Try to find three MAIN SONGS/PIECES that the composer is known for…and concentrate on explaining these… Too much information can lead to a “misleading overload”

HAVE FUN with this This is not to add stress at the end of the semester, but to secure the study/discussion of the other composers we are to focus on for this course… Bring your information to me in any form you wish! The more you try to copy from web sites and books, the less “interesting” this becomes. Use Note cards and such to organize your thoughts, then put it on paper! This will be due on the day we return back to class (Tuesday, April 23)… you have three FULL CLASS PERIODS that you can work to complete this assignment, as well as the full week and 2 weekends. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS will be taken. I will send out a text reminder to be sure you are working on the assignment diligently. I can tell if it is thrown together!
