Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session Proposal Focus on nonverbal communication over the AG –Play a game of charades composed on 2 teams of 3 people Focus on how to use a “personal” venue on a laptop (using PIG) while in a “main” session using a full AG node –Play a round-robin trivia game

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Timetable for the Session Welcome and explanation of session: 10 minutes Games: 40 minutes –Charades: 20 minutes –Round-robin trivia: 20 minutes Audience/remote site question and answer: 10 minutes

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session >> Introduction Nonverbal communication –Compliments verbal communication –Carries an additional channel of meaning Concept of dual presence –Extending chat rooms, instant messaging to videoconferencing (and beyond) –Like sitting in an auditorium and being able to talk/share ideas with people around you without interrupting the main session

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session >> Game Equipment Have a laptop pointing to team venue –AG PIG software –Headset with microphone –USB webcam Participate from AG node pointing to game venue –When consulting with team members, mute AG node mic near player to prevent eavesdropping –Cover mouth to prevent lipreading (necessary?)

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session >> Game >> Charades 2 teams of 3 people Person presents charade in main venue with his team members with mics live in main venue Team not guessing can consult about possible answer in their team venue If current team guess incorrectly, the other team may guess Possible twists on the game –Have 2 people present charade, not just 1 person –If in trouble, have another person help act out charade with only one person guessing

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session >> Game >> Round-Robin Trivia Similar to “Weakest Link” –Round-robin of trivia questions until time expires –Scoring Base-point value Multiplied by # of consecutive correct answers Multiplied by # of teams answering question wrong –2 rounds with 2 nd round having a doubled base-point value No one gets eliminated/voted off

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Session >> Game >> Round-Robin Trivia Each team receives a question Team members discuss the answer in their team venue before responding Response given in game venue Incorrect answers –Next team in order gets a chance, and if that team is wrong, remaining team gets a chance –If all teams guess wrong, question is “thrown out” and a new question is given to the team that first answered incorrectly

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Project Timeline Leading to Submission Date (April 7-21) Meeting 2 –Evaluate feasibility of dual-venue concept Meeting 3 –Have charades, trivia questions ready –Practice game sessions –Keep score using WBD Meeting 4 –Try and decide on scoreboard type –Try and decide on audience participation Meeting 5 –Create proposal for submission (can be concurrent process done offline between meetings)

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Open Items Audience participation –Allow audience members to play against team –Have them play along via entering answers and keeping score on web pages –Have audience give hints to players via instant messaging –Allow audience to submit charade topics and choose trivia questions to ask –Other suggestions…

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Open Items Scoreboard –Use VNC to display a program with an interface to keep score –Use WBD (whiteboard) –Use Java applet, Macromedia Flash –Other suggestions…

Electronic Visualization Laboratory University of Illinois at Chicago Open Items Charade topics –TV show, Movie, Book, Song, Other… Trivia questions –Level of difficulty –Restrict to certain topics –Where to find them
