Do Now: (3 min) Looking back on what we learned yesterday with the beads: 1. Explain the difference between a pure substance and a mixture 2. Explain the difference between an element and a compound.

Do Now Discussion 1. What is the difference between a pure substance and a mixture? A pure substance consists of identical particles. A mixture is a blend of two different pure substances 2. What is the difference between an element and a compound? An element is made of only one type of atom. A compound is made of two or more types of elements bound together.

Mixtures Cornell Notes 10/16/09 HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Classifying Matter Matter Pure Substance Mixture ElementCompound

Pure substances All particles of matter are identical. Element: substance made of only one type of atom Compound: substance made of two or more types of atoms chemically bound together

Mixture A physical blend of two or more pure substances in any proportion. Two types: ◦ Heterogeneous ◦ Homogenous

Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the individual parts can be seen OIL WATE R

Homogenous Mixture A mixture with a uniform composition (looks the same throughout) Water corn syrup sugar flavoring

Summary: (write this down!) Matter Pure Substance Mixture Element Compound Heterogeneous Homogenous

What’s that Substance? How it works: An example of a substance will be placed on the board Task: As a group, you will decide whether the substance is an element, compound, homogenous or heterogeneous mixture You will have 20 seconds to write your answer on the board When time is called, put your board in the air high and proud! Note: don’t put your board up before time is called, or other groups may copy your answer!

How it works (continued) Correct answers win a point ◦ Note: if your board is not in the air when time is called, you are not eligible to win a point Team with the most points at the end wins! Expectations: ◦ Be respectful ◦ All decisions are final ◦ If it gets too rowdy, the game will change to an individual practice activity (not a fun way to end the week!)
