Mobilizing Assets for Citizen-led Development Coady International Institute Sep 23-Oct 11 2013

Objectives, Timetable and Assignments

By the end of the program, we expect you to be able to:  Distinguish externally-driven development from community or citizen-led development  Understand how citizen-led development is affected by  Your own behaviour and attitudes  The culture of the institution you represent

And….  Understand where ideas about an asset-based approach to community development have come from  Understand how to use a range of tools to stimulate an asset-based citizen-led approach.  Understand the different roles and perspectives of stakeholders involved in citizen-led development (Community organizations, NGOs, Local Government, private sector organizations etc.)  Identify ways in which the principles (and in some cases the tools) of asset-based and citizen-driven development can be applied in their communities of place or interest

And…  Critically evaluate the linkages between:  community level practice,  the larger institutional context,  the policy environment. This will help us see the potential capacity of community members to control and sustain the development process.

Methods  Teaching methods used in the course include:  Mini-presentations  Case studies (some drawn from participants’ own experience)  Group simulation exercises (for applying tools)  Field visits (2+)  Films  Small group discussions

Materials  If requested, participants will get hard copies of powerpoints used in the course at the end of each week.  PDFs of all powerpoints, will be available to Certificate participants to download at the end of the course (Diploma participants will get soft copies at the end of the Diploma).
